Is Dr. Angel Ruiz Cotorro feeling the heat ?

The description for Dr. Angel Ruiz Cotorro's specialty has been changed from "licensed physician for completion of doping control" to "a specialist in sports medicine ", after a number internet poster's (myself included) pointed out that "licensed physician for completion of doping control" really means "doctor responsible for keeping athletes from testing positive". The webpage that has been changed :
http://www.medabcn.com/doctors/cotorro

My posting from 2 months ago :

The following is from post 302, thread
http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=8632&page=31

Rafa uses two Doctors to "prepare" for tournaments:
- Angel Ruiz Cortorro -
http://www.medabcn.com/doctors/cotorro

What is his specialty ?
"...he is a licensed physician for completion of doping control..."
Translated - He is the physician responsible for keeping athletes from testing positive. I suspect that he is no different than Dr. Ferrari.

I got that description ("he is a licensed physician for completion of doping control") from that webpage in July of 2011(http://www.medabcn.com/doctors/cotorro).

Why would the doctor have them change his job description on a stagnant, old webpage ?

Interesting observations.

I'm not sure the guy is feeling any heat, though.
Instead, I assume he gets full financial and legal backing from third parties such as the King of Spain, or the Spanish ministry of sports.

The fact that he had a phrase like that on his website initially suggests that the practice of dodging doping controls is a fully embedded in the Spanish sports system.

It is a funny thought, on the other hand, that he may have checked in here, saw your post, and decided to change that phrasing on his website (or had some PR guy do it for him).

I doubt that the good doping doctor peruses this site (his specialty sport is tennis). I suspect that one of our Spanish cycling fans alerted him to the brazen language in his job description.;)

There is only one reason that I can think of that a doctor who is trained to catch cheats, is working with the athletes to prepare for competition. The only difference between this guy, and Dr. Ferrari, is Dr. Cotorro seems to be immune from prosecution.

Note, Dr. Cotorro doesn't just work with Spanish athletes like Nadal. He also works with David Nalbandian (ARG), and Milos Raonic (CAN).

Sorry to revive this thread but it is reassuring to know that Rafa Nadal is still under the care of this physician. Regarding Nadal's recent injury:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/sep/05/rafael-nadal-knee-heal-doctor

"We have completely ruled out surgery," he said at a news conference in Barcelona. "During the next month we'll be doing training with a lot of physiotherapy, combined with hydrotherapy and laser, and we'll see how he progresses."

He added: "We believe that within two months the tendon will be in what we consider a normal state. In a month's time, if the tests and his progress are positive, he can get back to work on the court. But that's not the main goal, that is for the tendon to recover with the same strength it had."

Knee injuries have troubled Nadal before – he missed the defence of his Wimbledon title in 2009 due to tendinitis – but Ruiz-Cottoro is confident that the Spaniard will not be plagued by the current tendon injury for the rest of his career.

"It won't necessarily drag on, this injury," he said. "He wants to play when he can do so in perfect condition and not just for one tournament but to have continuity.

"When they tell you that you can't play such important tournaments you are never pleased but now he is keen to recover and return as soon as possible."

Good to know when Nadal comes back he will be as good as ever. I for one never doubted it! ;)

Is this not just a bad translation?
Además, es médico titulado para la realización del control de dopaje.
just means he is licensed to carry out doping controls.

Of course that's what it means.

A doctor is hardly going to advertise his skills in helping atheletes beat doping controls - even in Spain. :D
