That's sad for the German, but you can watch it on eurosport if I'm not mistaken. As long as there will be a rider from Luxembourg I can watch in on RTL Lux :)

Eurosport in German Langauge is Free to Air on Satellite across europe, so it shouldn't be a massive problem..

I doubt that any german speaking cycling nerd used to watch it on ARD/ZDF rather than on Eurosport.

We don't care.
It wasn't a cycling coverage anyway - it was just 1h doping education with condescension comments and riders+cycling bashing. They exaggerated everything and coverage seemed to be a torture for the reporters.

No one really followed them because of that.
Then they said they don't cover it because no one watches this ugly sport anymore.
TdF is expensive - and they have to waste their money with important things, like Musikantenstadl or clean Biathlon. German cycling fans saw through them a long time ago.

They wanted to stop earlier, but well then Lance came back and they could earn some money with him. Officially they had to follow contracts, but they wanted to quit coverage in 2009 actually.
If there would be a German golden donkey who ****s money for them, they would cover it. But of course he has to win a tour.

Greipel or Martin are not enough for them to make money.

Is ASO losing money because of this?

Usually TV rights are an important source of income.

What about other races? Are they losing, too?

German national tv channels much the same as the UK.
The BBC wouldn't get out of bed to cover road cycling.
Exceptions being:
a) Cav at the Tour
b) Any doping story that doesn't involve Lance.
Any other sport and they do their best to bury any doping revelation.

The BBC's sports news consists of football/soccer, soccer/football, Andy Murray's latest win, loss, near miss, injury, excuse......oh and football/soccer.

Luckily, Germany has the ONLY free to view version of Eurosport.
Everywhere else, megabucks.
ARD still have the most extensive coverage of it's one day "holiday specials", such as Koln.

The bolded is not necessarily true, it is also free to view in the Netherlands and I believe at least in France, at least you don't have to pay more than regular norma television.

It was rumoured that the European Broadcasting Union would lose their rights (which runs till 2012) if ZDF and ARD decided to leave the EBU. It could cause some problems, for instance in Denmark where Tv2 might lose the rights to broadcast the Tour.

Since they bought the rights, its f1 f1 f1 f1 f1. On the day Cav won Champs and Contador won Tour, the brief bulletin that this had happened came after a 5 minute report on the latest f1 race. 1/17th of f1 > The sport of road cycling as far as the bbc is concerned.

And remember, you cant dispute this formula because the bbc is the bastion of impartiality and fairness:rolleyes:

You're forgetting their (rather average) live coverage of the World Champs. ;)

They're very much focused on the track when it comes to cycling.

Trouble is, alothough a lot if Dutch tv is "free" you can't get access in most of the rest of Europe.
Don't you need a viewing card or wotnot? Only available with a Netherland's address.

German Eurosport 1, is free to anyone with a dish and the cycling is usually on there.

Yes, the BBC cover the World Championship RR and the...............................
(a mighty short season.)

I would like for more people to care about cycling. Having a 30 minute highlights package every day on one of the 5 main channels would do wonders for that.

Exactly. A population being kept in the dark, can have no desire for change.

The problem is you can't get any dutch television at all without cable. So dishes ar eout at all for Dutch television (unless you ahve digital television

But I didn't thought you meant outside of the country of airing

Yes, we will still be able to watch it on Eurosport, which is what I do anyway.

Lucky you! Currently I only have access to DVB-T-TV, and Eurosport stopped its DVB-T broadcast in my region somewhen after the 2010-Giro... I guess I have to get some serious Digital Cable TV until then... Eurosport is far better than ARD/ZDF in the Tour, btw.

who cares. I'd rather not have germany involved in cyclign anymore. they done nothing but trying so destroy it by spreading lies. only 2 years ago german tv also refused to broadcast the tour but where there with a full team of journalists trying to get dopingscandals but failed miserably. there's a reason people like kloden and wesemann refused to ride for germany or even changed their nationality like wesemann did

Cycling's bigger now than it was 15 years ago when channel 4 had 30 mins a day at 6pm.

It would help, but its obviously not the be all and end all.

Yeah, let's focus on sports who test substantially less than cycling and sports that close their eyes on cheating... good decision, german TV! :p

German Media , shame

WEll , i have read all your posts , and you are all correct .

Soccer Soccer Soccer , for hours and a minute for tour race results

This is a scourge that goes back to the begining of the automobile and the media and its behind the scene opinionated henchmen that want to control everyone elses pleasure to no end .
The media and its politically overcorrect attitude has no business in taking sides , when it is supposed to report and film the event . After all its a world famous event and still loved for what it is . The Tour Will remain and be there for years to come . What they dont realize they set their own program back .
The world is shifting to solar power and wind power and the bicycle is a part of that .
