Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

Yes in terms of total climbing its the hardest. I meant the climbs are harder than Liege but not typical long climbs like in Lombardia. This is the best WC route Vingo could ever get. Maybe the coach will talk him into WC participation, maybe he will be motivated himself (better the latter)
i think its comparable to what will be the final circuit in lombardia this year , just from km0 to the finish

I don't understand why it's so hard to admit that Vingegaard is simply mediocre in one-day races. He has ridden Liège and Lombardia, even in the years he won the Tour and the results were poor.

He raced San Sebastian before the Vuelta, and he didn't get a good result there either.
He has no good results, regardless of his form or race schedule.

I used to think he should have gone to Kigali, but if he didn't even factor it into his schedule, it’s obviously because he saw he didn't stand a chance.

Do you think he wouldn't have liked to win a World Championship? Indurain was a rider who rarely raced one-day races, and he has always said his biggest regret is not winning the road World Championship; he doesn't even mention the Vuelta, he always talks about the World Championship he didn´t win.

Froome also put out incredible watts in stage races but never achieved a decent result in one-day races.
Vingegaard has a similar profile to Froome; for some reason, they are unable to translate their performance to those races.

The difference is that such demands weren't made of Froome because Contador or Quintana weren't Pogačar.

Early last year, he said he would like to be in Kigali but didn't go, and I don't know if he said the same thing about Zurich. It’s not the first time he’s said something like that and then skipped the World Championships. He won't go. And at this point, I see no sense in demanding something of him that he has never done and has never shown himself capable of winning.
It's because people are not going by the results, which are indeed average but by the potential he has displayed. He simply has never done a one-day race with the ambition to win it or an explicit preparation for it so it's hard to draw conclusions from these subpar performances. It's pretty clear that he is happy to sacrifice his family life etc. for GT prep but not for one day races, hence showing up in subpar form at the end of the year I guess to keep sponsors happy etc.

On early Tour stages however (opening weekend where accumulated fatigue doesn't come in yet and literally everyone is in peak form) he has shown incredible form in stages that had a classic design, e.g. 2023 stage 1+2, 2024 stage 2, or 2025 stage 2 and 4.
In 2024, Pogacar and Vingegaard obliterated the San Luca climbing record, you think Vingegaard would magically not be able to do that in Giro dell'Emilia just because it is a one day race? Same for stage 4 in 2025, the gap at the top of the climb towards the rest was ludicrous for a 1km 10% climb. He has also been far better than Contador and Froome on these kind of stages.

Not hard to imagine that he could perform well in certain classics if he actually would put effort into it.

froome beat valverde on mur de huy early in the tour in 2015

do you think he could also beat valverde in fleche ?

True, I forgot that Froome had some nasty hilly stages, also the one with Sagan. Do I think he could've won Fleche if deliberately targeted? Not too likely but also not unthinkable. And that stage 3 was more a case of Valverde really underperforming.

Vingegaard won a very Fleche like stage in Itzulia 2023.

Realistically, I think that year was the missed shot to take a flyer in the Ardennes.

Yes Vingegaard could win Flèche. Look at the list of recent winners and he's got a fair shot. I'm not convinced Seixas is punchier than Vinge when he's got legs.

I think Jonas should tell her to stop talking. He's not a kid and she's not his mother.
Big boy can talk for himself. Or maybe not.

She also said guys can have their altitude camps in a tent at home and be more with families instead of going to altitude camps which causes stress.

She likes money that Jonas earned but hates everything else about cycling.

Didn't she say she would like him to ride all three Grand Tours in the same year?

That would have meant spending a lot of time away from home. Although Visma already spends a lot of time away; they are one of the teams that does most altitude training.

Altitude camps are overrated. You can actually live in Andorra or Livigno and you have all the altitude you need.

Girlfriends and wife's of sports millionaires should know millions come from being away from home on training, sponsorship deals or competing. Time for earning millions is usually very limited (careers can last only few years). So for them complaining guys are not home enough but at the same time love luxury life millions provide for is hipocrisy at it's finest.

Support your man to do the best he can. You have luxury, money, kids, anything you want and all husband from 30 to 35 years of age on. Please.

It's got probably more to do with bonding of staff and teammates. Trying new things and focusing only on cycling away from distractions at home. They get paid well to do it.

His wife doesn't look like the type that cares that deeply about money and life of luxury. They seem to be the type of people that are happy with having enough to live comfortably.

Sure, they don't flash luxury items, but she loves to use his money for many real estate properties (4 million and counting) all done under her name and she owns 100% ovnership of a company doing it and her own app for 200k investment that has no users.
Maybe she doesn't buy juwelery but there would be no real estate empire without Jonas being away from home.

4 million? DKK? EUR? GBP?

Many of the teams allow partners to visit for part of the camps,. That's why I say buy a house in Andorra or Livigno and you solve the altitude problem.

If Jonas is married and has kids then I think his wife should be able to at least say her point of view.
The demands of pro-sport are bad enough, without things like seeing your spouse being taken away in an ambulance. Remember Pogi wanting to leave the Tour when Urska crashed? Mads Pedersen planning to retire early because,
https://www.domestiquecycling.com/e...rement-plan-as-family-fears-drive-early-exit/
The other is his desire to start a family with his wife and avoid the difficulties he has seen other riders experience while combining parenthood with life in the professional peloton.
“It takes its toll on the body,” Pedersen said. “I also have a wife at home, and at some point we want to start a family. We are reaching an age where that is going to happen.”

All riders would be absolutely free to sit at home 250 days a year if they would bring results that way. But they wouldn't. It's not just about riders. There are so many members of staff riders need to train and compete so if a rider would sit at home doing training there, team needs to multiple staff to be with those guys at their homes and now all the staff aren't home and can't start families and have nagging wives.
You also don't hear much complaining from guys in Peloton that are not top riders. You only hear from those who already earned millions and are starting to think they don't need this any more.
And Trine [content deleted] has problems with him training away from home. And that's a guy that basically really races one GT per year and is a no show after TdF.

Is a business man that travels all the time and works 12+ hours a day doing any better? No, kids are growing up without him. And those guys usually never stop (athletes stop competing between 30 and 35ish).

He has just raced four GT's in a row.

Many of the peleton live in Andorra which is fine for altitude training. Going to places like Teide is an indulgence, especially when teams take their whole squads. I doubt sprinters/classic riders get much benefit from altitude training.

Are we... talking about the same Vingegaard here?
The guy who, this year:
Rode and won Paris-Nice. Including two stages, points jersey, and mountain jersey (and invented whole new fashion along the way.)
Rode and won Catalunya. Including two stages.
Rode and won the Giro. Including five stages.
And now of course we don't know what his plans might be for the rest of the year.

Oh, and last year, after the Tour, he rode and won the Vuelta. Including three stages.

🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

I generally try to steer away from the personal/family aspects of certain riders, but, damn, if I were to express how Vingo and Remco come off in those regards, I might risk getting banned.
Let's skip ahead.
:tearsofjoy:

The problem with Vingo is that he doesn't do one day races.

After the Giro and 2/3s of the TdF, he cannot race the Vuelta too.
What's left this year?

WT:
Renewi Tour is for sprinters or at least classics' puncheurs.
Tour of Guangxi is way too late for him: mid October

Pro-races:
Deutschland Tour ???
...???

What even is there for him to race?
