Jumbo - QuickStep merger

Leipheimer & Contador went to Astana, because they had a valid contract with Bruyneel.

Was that because Bruyneel took over Astana's then paying agent?

If so, how did most Astana riders transfer to Radioshack, but Contador was contractual bounded to Astana for 2010? Did he prolong his contract with the "sponsor Astana" itself or was it some sort of deal made which never was published?

I think something like that happened.

Astana was basically Tailwind with a new sponsor. However, Contador may have signed with the government of Kazakhstan.

When he was suspended, he mysteriously began appearing in Saxo Bank ads, which meant he was "fired" by the team, but immediately hired by the bank itself

Somehow i feel that Cook didn't just accidentally made a photo session with JV representatives. All dressed up and in front of camera. As fan and randomly.

That is some sort of sponsorship likely is in discussion. If not more then i guess at least for Apple Watch. And likely a bonus for Kuss. We'll see.

The Specialized Jumbo rumored talks are interesting. However, it still doesn't make sense to me. If this merger happens, the license will probably be with Visma. Therefore Remco and everyone with Quickstep are free to go to whomever they want. Imagine Remco on the open market? Ineos probably offers him way more than anyone else would. I am still dubious of this 'merger' but I am even more skeptical that Remco ends up with Jumbo. He makes more money and gets clear leadership elsewhere. Plus, unless the license is with Patrick, Remco and everyone gets to go where they want. Isn't that correct? A rider's contract is with a specific licensee and doesn't carry over to a merger because there can only be one World Tour license.

Then again, the longer this goes without clear denial from Patrick and the Jumbo people, the more we all wonder about it happening. Of course, Jumbo has a reason to keep these rumors out there, it drives up the chance of them getting a big name sponsor by driving up demand.

Unless they want to be seen... 😉
It really is starting to seem like a wagging the dog moment. The Jumbo people clearly want the rumor of this merger out there. Hence to lack of denial, etc. Obviously it drives their price up and makes future sponsors desperate to get a deal done to stop them from going with Soudal. What I don't understand is what's in it for Patrick. Yes, he had the casual denial internal memo thing but if this was way off, he could squash it pretty quickly and easily in public. Why hasn't he? He doesn't have as much to gain from these rumors unless this merger might actually happen.

Since Jumbo is definitely on the way out and Quickstep doesn't seem to be mentioned in the merger let's just refer to the two parties as Soudal and Visma, eh? Seriously I don't understand this whole thing. Visma needs another big bucks sponsor, are they just trying to steal Soudal from Lefevere? I don't think he's that stupid (quite). Or does Patrick think he can outsmart the Visma braintrust and come out running the whole thing? Or is Lefevere no longer calling the shots at Soudal Quickstep?

So based on all the recent posts, then is Specialized partnering with Visma since JUMBO is gone, correct? Why cant' Specialized partner up with Visma and get a third sponsor while keeping Quickstep Soudal alone? or is it Quickstep Soudal partnering with Visma while bringing Specialized on board? So whose license & Management is really taking over? Lefevere's or Visma's

what an entanglement

Honestly, I know it's a lot to ask for UCI to be useful, but surely a rule against mergers randomly being decided this late in the season should be possible.
It's pretty clear this isn't a matter of everyone involved having known for a time, but it only becoming public knowledge recently.

Remco was already offered a lot of cash by Sky/INEOS when he went pro, he declined it back then, he'll decline it again if he feels that Jumbo is able to get him to win the TDF.

Jonas won't agree probably
How is it any different from going to the tour with roglic. I personally think remco going along with the merger will be better for his ambitions and career in the long run. His been surrounded by yes men at SQS and having to complete everywhere to earn his bonus. He'll get a tailored plan and schedule and can start his first TDF with less pressure.

Mergers are not uncommon in cycling. Quickstep are the outcome of a merger themselves as are several other teams too.
Listening to TCP with Kerchoffs on it, discussing the merger more in depth, it really does sound like Plugge wants to work with Remco and it really does sound like he can't find a sponsor. Soudal is not a big value sponsor though. It sounds like Jumbo brought several other sponsors so they are theoretically at risk of not continuing without the merger as Plugge hasn't yet found a sponsor. Kerchoffs seems to think Jumbos 2024 money is actually spread over 3 years because it's a payment for Jumbo the company to say they are founding partners of the newly named team without Jumbo's logo.

If Remco goes to Jumbo, I think the only way he will win the Tour is like Kuss did this year. That's if he can last the course. It seems like it's desperation to get Remco his Tour win at any cost.

I'm not talking about a rule against mergers, I'm talking about a rule against teams randomly starting talking about a merger this late in the season. Especially when it - like in this case - isn't a matter of one of the teams folding anyway.
If the talk had started in, for example May, then it wouldn't have been that big an issue.

And how are Quickstep the outcome of a merger?

If he wants to win the tour, he'll have to be better than Jonas anyway, be it in the same team or another.
So it makes no difference.
Even on the contrary perhaps, he'll have equal team/staff support, at least when it comes to training, schedule, preparation and all that.

Agree with the sentiment, but the counter argument would be that the risk of the team(s) folding at the end of 2024 means a messy merger now mitigates far more uncertainty and the possiblity of a far worse outcome down the road.

Cycling resembling the trend of the rest of the world the last decade with a far higher concentration of revenues/market among the top few firms in most markets. Rather than putting in place barriers to merger, I'd rather we look at ways of leveling the playing field other ways (drafts? wage ceilings? getting Gianni Savio to DS the winningest team) to help further the stability and visibility which would make the sport more appealing to long-term potential sponsors.

This article may delay the merger to 2025 :
Artikel 2.15.044 UCI “A licence may only be transferred after two years (from the date of its award).”

Or Visma should buy the company behind the licence of soudal quickstep...
