Stage 14 is a hilly affair, starting in Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateux, and finishing in the small town of Mende.

When Mende was visited in 2010, Alexandre Vinokourov looked to be on his way to victory, until Joaquim Rodriguez and Alberto Contador attacked up the last slopes, dropping yellow jersey Andy Schleck with 10 seconds in the process.

Ten seconds was counted for a lot between Andy and Alberto in that years Tour, perhaps the latest and most truely mano-a-mano duel between equals, we have had in the Tour de France, famously exemplified in the track stand up the Ax-3 Domaines.

2015 didn't disappoint either. A breakaway contested victory, with Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot initally outclimbing their breakaway companions. Unfortunately for them, they looked at each other to the point, they couldn't see anyone else, and so Steven Cummings saw his chance to catch the two at the flat and outsprinting them to victory.

The big 4 were all together before the climb, where Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali saw an opportunity to break clear, since Froome was isolated. Nibali couldn't hang on after all, and so Quintana was alone in his offensive against Froome...

...to get back to the white jersey wearer Nairo Quintana, and sprint by him to gain one second.
As steep as the climb in Mende is, a GC showdown seems likely, but will the GC favorites bother to reel in the breakaway, who will without doubt be of some size (it was a big one in 2015)? Will we see two battles instead, one for the stage win, and another between GC contenders? Or will the top guns make a truce, saving energy for the days ahead?

Wonder what Alaphilippe will do. He was in all Alpe breakaways, but this is his best chance for another stage win.

Sky won't keep this together for the stage, Dumoulin isn't favoured vs Froome here.

Valverde might try for the breakaway too?

I'm really looking forward to those two Massif Central stages. The final climb is so steep that I'd say it's rather unlikely that nothing happens between the gc contenders. Look out for roglic who was incredible on these kind of climbs in the Basque Country in spring. I expect the break to win though. Alaphilippe is probably the favorite and I surely wouldn't complain about a win by him.

QS, Roglic, Martin, Valverde - all the usual suspects :)

(or G sprints away from Dawg again to gain more seconds, then says Froomey's our leader!)
It's ideal for them.
G sucking up those booos on the podium (while Froome is chillin in the bus) for as long as possible and then will be ordered to sit and let the Vrooome win his 5th and go for the Grand Slam :D
Only Dummo could spoil this plan if he'll stay too close to Froome so Sky won't be willing to gamble v G.

I think it might be slightly too long for Alaphilippe? I mean not in a one-day classic obviously, but after 2 weeks of Tour it's different.

Unless he is in the breakaway.
For the GC men it's hard to tell. Froome likely to lose time.

Breakaway is implied. I dont think theres anyone thats gonna chase this.

If Martin had sat up when he was crashing and losing time in week one he would have been a great pick for this one, either from a break, or from an unmarked attack if it was all together. Instead he has exhausted himself to hang on in 9th on GC, over five mins down and over 3 mins off a podium, with a TT still to come.

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme has called for calm from fans after Chris Froome was slapped and apparently spat at on the climb to Alpe d'Huez on Thursday.

Everyone be nice to the poor asthmatic.
How outrageous to demand that fans don't assault the riders.

Do you really think it's OK to slap people and spit in their faces? In any context, never mind one as trivial as a bike race?

It's not ok and of course they should tell the fans to calm down, but frankly I expected even worse things after he was cleared to race.
