Didnt notice it on Stage 1, but lots of it today:

Lee-oh-parrd Trek.

This cannot continue... I wonder what he thinks when Paul says it normally seconds later.

"Lee-oh-pard" is the normal Anglicized pronunciation of the official Luxembourgish/German/whatever name of the team.

Was really irritating me on the first stage that he wasnt pronouncing it correctly. He was obviously told last night to change. He irritates me no end to the extent of not being able to watch with the sound on. Going on about Thor being Garmins best TTer, talking about how SaxoBanks time would b very hard for any team to beat etc etc. The guy has gone senile. Give me Harmon anyday

Leopard specifically requested that it be pronounced Lay-oh-pard

Phil is technically pronouncing it correctly.

Thankfully all the other commentators decided it was ridiculous and continued to call them Leopard as in the animal.

I use to love Phil Ligget's commentating back in the mid to late 80's when he was working for CBS at the tour. Still have the vids today (85 to 88 TdF's).

But it was driving me crazy how many times he was mentioning the names of Mark Cavendish or George Hincapie in Stage 1. It sounded like he was obsessed with them. Almost as bad as when Armstrong was racing. Even then I think Armstrongs name got mentioned more than some of the other favourites. I think i will have Eurosport commentating going on in the background.

He has been doing it long enough to be able to say what he wants and do what he wants if we like it or not the media will still buy it because he said it.

He dose his thing for a lot of countries so he will fit something in so they sell the story.

Its not the TDF or Phil its the addvertising that counts if sponsors like him he will keep doing it for now but he is getting old now so we wont se him for much longer. he must be 66-69 yo from memory. he rode juniors with me.

It's not that ridiculous. Le - o - pard probably corresponds to the proper Luxembourgish pronunciation.

What bothers me more is his pronunciation of Hushovd when it should be Hus - hovd (no -sh- sound) and 'Boysen" Hagen. EBH's name does not derive from boysenberries.

Fair enough, I wasn't aware of the pronunciation thing with Leopard Trek. It reminds me of when Murray Walker started calling Ayrton Senna "Eye-Air-Ton Senna" after years of regular "Air-Ton".

Anyway, anything to be said on whether he's too long in the tooth or not has been said already. To me he's like an old pair of slippers, might have the odd hole in but they're still comfy so I'll carry on wearing them.

The TTT was a bit of a nightmare though, you're watching a team approach the end of the course and you can see the clock ticking down, clearly going to be a close call, you're concentrating on seeing when the line's coming... and it's like Liggett is deliberately trying to throw you off focus by apparently watching a different stopclock. I sometimes wonder if the commentary is delayed...

He really said that?

Shakes head in amazement. I might have to listen to him just for the amusement value.

He will be 68 later this year according to Wiki. Where you based in the North-West, I think he was in the Birkenhead North End at one point?

Not their best TTer, but certainly their best team time trialist. As was evidenced yesterday, he was clearly the strongest. Ergo: Liggett is right.

Yes, you can make a case there, but the Saxo Bank time would be hard to beat? Did he know what he was saying there?

He is starting to remind me of Murray Walker that's for sure. It was always a case of when, not if he was going to say something silly. That said I still enjoyed Murrays commentary, much as I do Phils now. Could do without Paul though

Yeah, Phil is very much like Murray, and to me this adds to the entertainment. On the subject of Paul Sherwen, do others notice how often he says, "but let's not forget" ?????!

Yes and it annoys me but not as much as when he repeats the last sentence that Phil has just just said.

I am just waiting for Phil to start talking about how much he loves the clean bottle stuff...he has been doing this everytime for about a year and a half that he is on the teevee...he must have stock in the thing I would think...or I would hope so...

My own personal theory about Phil is that he is early stages of dementia and the other fools humor him...

"you are so right Phil and it is like you have always said...the yellow jersey gives you wings...." must be the most overused thing on coverage...that and "dancing on the pedals" bit...Phil and Paul are so beyond their due date...

I still don't get how Thor's name is to be pronounced correctly.
