They never varnish the track, its bare wood. The surface was replaced a few years ago after it started throwing a few small splinters. Something like this can and has happened on any track.

I literally had a front row seat.
Awang got back on his bike and actually sneaked in for 3rd spot.
Dawson the NZ riders carried his bike over the line and then collapsed.
Whole of his right shoulder had no skin left.
Medics all gathered to help.

Meanwhile Awang had rode on as far as the bend, then collapsed in shock.
No one came to his aid except for one girl who tried to pull him to his feet.
Eventually, he was stretchered passed us.
The crowd gave him a standing ovation while he gestured to his leg, on full display.
With that, the whole stadium let out a stunned gasp.
That splinter looked even bigger close up.

Worst of all, they left it in his leg, overnight.
Operated on 10-30am.

According to the article i read in the telegraph, his cries of pain covered the arena.

His screams of pain could be heard around the packed velodrome

But you dont mention this, say he collapsed from shock, and presumably he was relatively conscious when he pointed to his leg.

Out of interest did this happen?

Also would like to see Awang maybe move to the road at some point in the future like so many succesful track cyclists before him. If he had some success could help promote the sport in South Asia.

Why do track bicycles not have bar-tape?

Some of the bars they use already have the grip built into the lower half of each side so bar tape isn't needed.

 You witnessed that carnage?!
I can't believe those guys made it across the finish line.
I'm assuming they did some track repair immediately afterwards?

Yikes.

What happened was folks in the area saw he was in serious difficulty, they started to shout at officials to get their attention. This gradually spread around that corner of the velodrome to where we were; opposite the huddle around Dawson.
We started shouting and pointing etc.
The media area was right where he was, so he may have been crying out in pain, but the general noise level around the stadium was extreme, due to the whole chaotic affair. If he did, it wasn't audible to the vast majority.
A slight case of journalistic license.

It looked like he had, to us, gone into shock, because the one official in attendance, was trying to haul him to his feet, while he appeared almost unconscious.
Well, we all now know the reason why!

Yes, we got a real up close and personal view: It was sickening.
Watching the finishing "sprint" was an odd experience, to say the least.
We even had a DQF for pushing an oppenent while running to the line.
Although they carried out some minor track "touch up", it wasn't
as much as I'd expected to see.

Right, well, when he does the hand gesture, he was looking straight towards our position. I was front row, in line with Dawson's back.

I was working in the track centre at the time and all I can say is the whole velodrome felt both deathly silent yet deafening with noise at the same time after the incident.

I was more interested in Dawkins though as he looked worst crossing the line yet I think for hm it was parft exhaustion and loss of adrenaline once he crossed the line. Also, as prep before the start of the first round, he was leaping up staircases in just two bounds. I have not seen such power from a big guy in all my life. Then he would do it in three bounds on one leg. I was suitably impressed.

Also was speaking to John after the event on Sunday evening and Awang was doing well and was getting ready to fly back to Melbourne yesterday.
