Martin is not happy with Alpe d'huez descend.

Should the descent be allowed in the race?

  • Normally no but it might be the only chance to do something against Froome.

“The road is old, narrow, the surface bad, no barriers, if a rider makes a mistake he will face a free fall of 30 meters. To send us there is irresponsible. And I cannot imagine that anything about the road will change before the Tour.”

30 meter free fall is pretty bad but i can't help it but be excited for some crazy descending :D

IT should be ridden, only if it's safe enough.

If rider falls, and some way in worst case scenario dies or gets badly injured, well then......

However if there's no massive hazards involved, then I cant see many problems.

Pretty bare mountain. Riders can see what's in front of them for hundreds of meters in advance. Good for the escapees, but might be tricky for the larger group due to the narrowness.
Nothing overly technical on the long stretches joined with hairpins.
The surface makes it mechanically risky, and only the lack of concentration can make it physically harmful.

hopefully they race fast up the 1st Alpe, so no isk of big groups on the downhill

maybe the local roads-maintainance people are late with the resurfacing because of the bad weather they had during all spring. now it should be better so they can do it in time for the tour (there's still 1 month to the stage 18)

It's not like ASO had any other options to make a multi-mountain stage. There's a lack of climbs in the Alps. Anyway why is Martin so worried? He'll be long dropped by then, he can take it easy on the descent.

Honestly Martin is sounding like he's just whining. He should just make a mental note to take it easy on the descent instead of complaining about it, it's not like he's a GC contender anyways. As long as the riders don't go crazy and are aware of their surroundings on the descent they should be fine.

Maybe he's concerned about his fellow riders, some of whom may be riding the descent harder than him.

Then he should just send out a tweet or message or whatever to the other riders saying "make sure to be careful on the descent" instead of calling it "irresponsible" of the organizers to make them descend it. Which makes him sound like he's whining and just didn't like descending it.
