I will just have to answer this question Myself. Have been in touch with Andy Clark from Competitive Cyclist Today. Quote " our actual weights are based upon our employees removing a product from its packaging and hanging it from a very accurate gram scale. Thus, the actual weight of the Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset 2011 weighed in at 1555 grams. Bear in mind, however, that the process of aluminum extrusion isn't an exact science, and as a result the rim of the wheel can weigh +/-5%, so Your wheels could be slightly heavier or slightly lighter. So bear that in mind when purchasing an aluminum wheelset ".

Good field work there, and an interesting answer from CC.

I've also heard that components are true to weight early in a production run, when the dies are still new. As the dies wear down over time, the pieces they produce get incrementally larger and thus heavier. When this reaches a certain tolerance limit the dies get replaced and the resulting components are back to spec weight, at least for a time.

Any engineers or machinists out there with the real scoop?
