“Cadel chances were back in 2008, without AC and with Andy losing 9 minutes, there is no way he'll win, none whatsoever.” Gatate

“Bet he crumbles in the first mountain stage” Orbis_25

“Evans 2nd on a hilly finish, wow what a shocker. He will lose minutes in the real mountains” Ryo Hazuki

“I don't think Evans will be able to follow the first 5 riders on the big mountains. He will lose a lot more time there.” Kwibus

“Cadel will be lucky to Podium.” Cyclestationguiseppe

“Cadel is just not good on the long climbs. I had a marathon session earlier this year with older TdF's and I could pinpoint exactly when Cadel gets dropped.” Rzombie1988

“To win a tour one has to attack or follow the attack and he cant. It is physical not mental” Boeing

“A rider who isn't scared to pull off a daring and strong attack will win this race. That will NOT be Cadel Evans.” Berzin

“Evans will need a 5 minute lead on all GC Contenders heading into the mountains for him to have a chance.” AndreJ

“Evans always has an excuse. I punctured at the wrong time. I fell and got a hangnail. I got sick. The winner was doped just like the rest of the top ten. Oh, woe is me. If it happened once then that would be one thing, but it happens every grand tour. Evans is the Australian George Hincapie. He never has what it takes to win the big one.” .Damiano Machiavelli

“It's just not going to happen for him, if he was 27 or 28 he may have a chance in the future but even then I doubt it.” MSport

“I can't wait for when he cracks when on one of the first 2 MTF and all this aussies and their hyping leave the forum so we can have some peace again.” Parrulo

“I don't mean to be rude, because I am an AC fan, but... whoever thinks that Cadel is a contender is going to get disappointed soon.” Senor_Contador

“You know Evan's day is coming. He'll have one of his breakdowns. It's just a matter of time.” Richwagmn

“He will lose 5-10minutes across all the MTFs” Ferminal

How’s the pie tasting you bunch??

ah yes, as opposed to people with absolutely no justification except blind hope suggesting 2 weeks ago that he was going to climb as well as Contador, Andy and Sanchez.

Really? Are you really are moderator on this forum? 5-10 minutes on every mtn finish. Rofl.

In a few months time perhaps you'll be wrong and the statements said here correct :p

But seriously what's the chance of the top 4 testing positive so Contador wins? :p

Oh dear. What is wrong with Evans fans? Please let the forum celebrate his win. Go read the Grenoble thread--almost the whole thing is in support of him.

The assessments above were mostly based on what has happened. Ferminal is right: Evans fans were riding hope and hype, just like Gesink fans, etc. He did produce an amazing ride, definitely showing that he was the strongest, but nothing in his history suggested that he would--especially given the race's route this year.

I seriously believe that the AC-fans were riding on hype this tour. Don't get me wrong, he raced really hard during this Tour and attacked but with the über-hard Giro, I would say that all the people who were saying that he would win was kind of asking for too much. I know he had some problems withs his knee, but I don't believe that he would have won anyway, thought we will never know of course.

Crap thread is crap. At the end of the day none of the aforementioned posters can't predict the future (I mean if they could, they would predict the winning lotto numbers).

A key difference for me this year was that Evans hadn't burnt all his matches before the tour. He was underdone at the dauphine and for me that was a great sign. I was a bit dubious and thought he was top 5 but he was going about things the right way and giving himself every chance.

Truth. I remember reading that he wasn't too happy with his form coming into the Tour this year. I suspect that was b/c he normally races hard all year, so he's used to being at 90% throughout the season but never hitting the sweet spot. Hence the string of second places, and hence why he might not be satisfied with 85% at the start of the Tour.

This year, he came in a little lower, and that gave him the chance to develop more. So he was kicking *** by the time they hit the Alpes. (I just posted this in the Grenoble thread, too  )

I could be wrong about this, but--based on his performance and his comments--I think it's reasonable.

No justification, i had plenty of justification that he would win the tour. not blind hope.

This has been an awesome Tour!
The best since 2006 IMO.

Yell Yell Yell for Cadell dell dell!

Anyway, here is what I predicted way back on the "Can Cadel Win?" Thread.
Glad to see Cadel followed my advice!
Although we still have to make it to the 3K to go banner yikes!

Yell Yell Yell!

I thinks Cadel's best chance of winning would come if he can take the Yellow Jersey late in the race. As late as possible.

I am not saying Cadel has a history of choking while wearing a Leaders Jersey, but then again maybe I am saying that.

Probably the Grenoble – Grenoble ITT on stage 20 would be a good choice to take the Yellow Jersey for the first time.

Then try not to choke on the final stage run in down onto the Champs-Élysées....just make it to the 3km to go banner

Most AC fans said Andy would win.

Careful, he might have a mechanical tomorrow, freak out, punch someone's head off and be DQ'ed.

Anyway, this thread is fun if you take it lightly. We all make wrong predictions, and it's fun to point out when they turn out to be terribly wrong even though they were perfectly reasonable at the time they were made, considering the precedents.

Meh. I also thought Cadel would fail, but I am happy he didn't. No need to gloat, even if some particularly malicious posters deserve it.

The Cuddles fanboys would look a lot less prickly/defensive if they also included all the comments about how Wiggins, Schlecks, Contador, RS riders etc were going to do. Afterall, most predictions end up being wrong. If people were good at making predictions then they would either be making lots of money at the bookies or selling their tips.

Mind you, I do think it is quite funny that someone would go to all the trouble of collecting and storing all the 'Cuddles won't win the TDF' quotes.
