Piana delle Mele is a part of the municipality of Guardiagrele. The climb is about 10km with an average gradient of 6%. I suppose preceded by Passo Lanciano or il muro di Guardiagrele.

Out of today's top-eight on the queen stage of Ronde de l'Isard, seven riders are third- or fourth-year U23s. Of course it's a snapshot and nowhere near everyone of note is there, but it still says something about this year's cohort because that would have been unthinkable pretty much any other season post-Covid.

No U 23 climber of note is riding Isard. Roberto Capello showed some prmise as a junior from the 2007 born bunch, but after joining EF, he's nowhere to be seen on the European scene.

Give him time, he's only 18. He's not raced for a while maybe injured or other issues.

Well most of the current U23 talents that are exceptional are already pro with the likes of Seixas, Withen Philipsen, Omrzel, Widar, Brennan etc.

Than you have the remaining U23 greats not present (Finn, Alvarez, Sparfel etc.) so it becomes a bit of a C-Tier race for the U23 like this.

But thats not too bad because the riders who are competing here need races like this to become pros.

That's only half the story. The other half of the story is that the 2007-born cohort is unusually weak, especially in the climbing department, and it really shows on a day like yesterday.

We can all agree that the 2007 class is pretty weak when it comes to climbers, but to be fair, the top talents aren't even racing Isard. Either that, or they're injured. The only guy with any sort of palmarès in hilly junior races riding Isard is Johan Blanc.

A lot of the class of 2007 also seem to be being brought along very slowly and given extremely cautious race schedules.

Jan Jackowiak finished 6th on GC in the 2.1 Giro di Sardegna showing he could compete yet ever since has been only riding .2 cat races.

Daan Dijkman won U23 LBL as a 1st year which is pretty impressive.

Watching Giro - of course - and then comes the brilliant news:

"I just got a text from Michael Mørkøv. Mads Landbo has won."

Alvarez is moonlighting as domestic lately for Pedersen, Ayuso and for the more senior riders at Lidl-Trek Future Racing. I predict that he could be at the level of more serious racing come Tour de l'Avenir later this season.

i thought stage 3 would be harder and stage 7 with a more direct approach , now they could maybe even have included the muro without making the stage longer

Monte Livata is a hilarious Cima Coppi.

It's an interesting route and aside from the obvious, I'm pleased to see Forcella di Acciano in a RCS race (Tirreno next, please). That being said, it would have benefited from one of the first five stages being designed for GC action. Stage 3 is the obvious issue, Montagna Grande di Viggiano was right there. Aside from that, Vibo Valentia could have been somewhere in between a HTF and a MTF with a different approach.

I think the Muro would have been overkill for u23s in a stage that hard. There's more than enough opportunity to create huge gaps.
