Mexican Cyclists

It seems that there's somewhat of a drought concerning cyclists from Mexico. I know that there's several Mexican teams, but I don't hear much or anything about them. The only great Mexican rider to break onto the sport was Raul Alcala, and that was a long time ago.

As far as South America goes, I know that teams sign Colombians, Venezuelans, Brazilians. Both my parents are Mexican so I guess that's why I want to see riders from that country ride. I remember reading in Velonews magazing late last year, I think it was the manager from Geox (Footon-Servetto at the time I read it) that he wanted to sign a Mexican. The Chipotle Development team has a young Mexican riding for them.

What other good Mexican riders are out there?

That's right, I forgot to mention him.

He's riding for Canel's Turbo right now. Not sure if that was a move from him or not. He was at a good spot in Ceramica.

Mexican parents? Any chance the 8-A in your screenname represents your surname?

Anyway, looking at CQ, the prospects of Mexican cycling look pretty bleak. Their highest ranked rider is Carlos López. There's also a couple of Mexicans in Movistar's continental team.

Yes it is. My surname's Ochoa. In Spanish 8 is ochoa, with the dash and an A, it spells out Ochoa.

I've also heard that Mexico doesn't have that big of a cycling governing body. Is that true?
I guess it should be. I havn't seen any Mexicans riding the worlds.

There's that chap Sarabia who was well rated a couple of years back, think he's riding for Conti Movistar in S.America now.

he rides in mexico with empacadora - san marcos team.

mexico seem to have coming up an incredible 1991-1992 and 1993 generation, but we have to see how they will develop since the last batch of great talents didn't really make it the way it was hoped like sarabia, macias, moises aldape, magallanes and aguirre (he's still only 22)

cq is the worst possible way to look at south american cyclists and especially prospects since apart from vuelta mexico there is no sancionted uci race while there are tons of mexican pro races.

mexican cycling federation is actually pretty big and the cycling scene is relative rich. a colombian superstar like ladino rides for canels turbo for money no one in colombia could pay, mexico had a big loss thought when tecos cycling team folded 2 years ago, they were one of the biggest teams in latin america.

also pretty good prize money. I saw website of vuelta leon I think or mazatlan and they had 20.000 euros worth of prize money for 5 days of racing.

Alessandra Grassi managed 11th at the Giro Donne a few years back.

Veronica Léal is probably Mexico's best female cyclist at the moment. She's managed a 12th at the Giro Donne, and top 10s at the Tour de l'Ardêche and Giro della Toscana. She's a feisty rider, I like her.

Raul Alcala is starting the Redlands Classic!

Is there a time trial? Because Raul is the current Mexican TT champion (yes, really - no April Fool). It would be great for him to show off the colours.

He was one of my favourites back in the day.

Mexico is bidding for the 2014 Worlds. Is there a home nation rider allowance? Not sure when the last time Mexico had a rider in the mens road race.

Just checked the archives - Aldape finished 30th in 2006 in Salzburg. Julio Perez, his team mate, was a DNF. Not sure about Stuttgart?
