muscle and joint pain, in one side only

I have had this problem for quite a while.

I get a lot more tension and pain/fatigue in my left side of the body, actually all the way from my neck to my knee. Deep tension in abs just above the left side, above the hip. Also in my left side of my back.

I went through knee surgery on my right knee 4 years ago. Bit no matter how much I try to strengthen the right side more, the left side keeps hurting.

The is a lot more tension in the right hip and when biking I can feel it's pretty stiff.

Any thoughts ?

I had surgery on my knee 15 years ago and still have some issues with balance. I would bet that you are likely very tight in your left ITB and you are most likely out of whack in the pelvis because of the left side tension. That will impact on just about everything - which is what you are feeling.

The bottom line is that you need to get someone who knows what they are doing to assess what is going on currently. Releasing tension/tightness of the type you describe is not a 1 step process and requires a combination of stretching, massage and building of weak muscle groups along with a bike fit that is working with your functional needs - its complicated and needs to be based on a clear starting point from a good assessment. Working on hunches is just going to cause you grief.

Whatever you do, plan on a process that seeks to correct imbalance by a combination of processes. Just trying to strengthen your right leg will not help if there are other functional issues when you are on the bike such as leg length differences etc - you need to develop a relationship with someone who knows what they are doing.

I dunno about joint pain, but:

I've had a left knee problem for nearly 2 months, so I've been stretching it heaps and doing some "pre-hab" exercises.

My lower back on the right side has also been bad for a few months; the worst it's been for probably 5 or 6 years.

The other day, I had my best ride in several weeks (70km, which included some sustained efforts at around 80% max HR), and my right quad, hip flexors and a bit of glute fatigued way quicker than my "bad" side (left)!

I figure I was either using my good/right side more than I realized, or all the stretching I've done for the bad/left leg has got it functioning better. Or, my lower back is stuffing it up.

I agree on the posts above. For my personal experience, I also try castor oil for joint pain, very helpful in any pain that you may feel. It reduces and it relieves any future possibilities of joint pain. Anything that can eases pain, I can say I am grabbing all alternative treatments tat I can get. :D
