Nice cheap road mirror

Mirrycle makes these great road mirrors that mount on brake levers. They give you a big clear unobstructed and undistorted view, even on rough surfaces.

But they only work on some types. I liked the mirror so much I was going to change my levers to use it -- until I found out what the levers cost -- dura-ace and ultegra stuff.

So... what I did is got a Mirrycle Mountain mirror (which is basically the same mirror) and figured out how to get it on my brake. It turned out to be really easy. In my case (old suntour levers) I drilled a vertical 1/8" hole down from the top of the brake and tapped it with a #8-32 tap. I also cut a little plastic off the mirror mount with a hacksaw, and got a #8-32 screw at the hardware store. It came out awesome.

(I almost got killed once using a oberlauda ultralight, which made me really picky about mirrors. And those bar end mirrors suck too.)

I've never used mirrors, but recently tried a bar end mirror that was a customer's bike I was servicing. But since I have nothing to compare it to, what didn't you like about that type?

Until I cannot turn my head I will never use a mirror. Been there and done that. I honestly think that mirrors are less safe than a head turn and a good look. A skill very important to riding in traffic. Old debate, personal experience contradict attitudes.

I agree - I've ridden with riders using mirrors who turned in front of vehicles when making a left turn.

That being said I have heard positive comments about the 'Bike-Eye' frame mounted mirror.

:)

In motorcycling parlance, turning the head before moving off your line is called a 'life saver' and a mirror is no substitute for it.
