I believe there was a heavy mountain stage where he lost a lot of time...but I missed one stage and I'm not certain what happened...plus a horrible TT performance.

I missed the entire stage race, however I'm going to watch every single meter on my streaming VOD service....in another dimension with infinite time....

However witnessed some of Sven's (sigh, Thibeau ofc - still have to get used to it!) capabilities earlier this year, and I've seen enough to state that he has entered the ProTour to stay.

So? Do they plan on winning the TDF? I doubt it. The guys you bring for Milan (Stuyven, Pedersen) are always in the team if they want. It's not that hard to swap two riders of their '23 or '24 line-up with Milan and Nys imho.

And depending on the route, he might well be worth it.

Riders like Merlier and Kooij can't get a gig in the TDF. Lidl will have a GC interest in the TDF and should unleash Milan which leaves no place for Nys. I can't see Nys at the TDF for a few years in the future because teams are risk averse to having multiple objectives.

Kooij and Merlier are riding on a team that has actual podium contenders. Lidl does not have those. It's quite simple. Furthermore, Nys could be of use in hilly finales for the GC riders on the team, where you basically get no use from Milan. And there is no guarantee Milan gets 2, 3 or 4 wins. In fact, depending on the route, Nys might have just as big a shot at bringing home a win or two.
Also interesting that you can even look into the future, especially considering Nys has only just this year made a huge leap, winning 5 WT races. I assume you already know he will no longer evolve beyond his current level?

First he will have to prove that he is up to the level required. He has been winning in smaller races vs good opposition, but the tour is something else. And when I saw him being relegated in Poland on rather friendly climbs, he still has some growing to do.
But he has some serious finishing power, probably he wil find even better opportunities in Spain and Italy? They love these punchy finishes there. If he can do in grand tour stages what he did this year in smaller races, there will always be a place for him.

It would be already be much better at this point to bring Nys instead of Skjelmose if you really want to only have two objectives, Skjelmose can top-10 if lucky while Nys can win stages. I'd personally build my team around Millan, Nys and Pedersen and just try to win as much as possible and maybe bring Cico for KOM jersey and stage hunting on top in the mountains and then let Tao and Skjelmose do Giro/Vuelta.

Trek can win 6-7 stages with these guys without thinking about a fringe top-10 all the time.

Sending him to the Giro or Vuelta makes sense from a road racing perspective, as he himself actually stated. The problem is that it doesn't gel well with his cyclocross ambitions. Giro comes too soon and Vuelta ends too late, if he wants to ride a full winter. He said he obviously can't/won't claim a TDF spot, but that it would fit best in his schedule. That's what the discussion is about. And with Lidl not having a real GC rider who can bring home the bacon, i have no idea why it should be so impossible to fit him into the TDF team.

Its simple. WE don't know how Thys will evolve in the future but we do know that teams are risk adverse to having multiple objectives in the TDF.

But we already know his CURRENT level. It'd make more sense to take him over Bagioli, Skjelmose, Bernard and Skujins imho. They can have Milan and his train, but for GC they don't need dedicated helpers because the best they can dream of is a top 10 in GC. So put a few guys in support of Milan (most of which could help in case of a GC situation manifests), and then save some spots for wildcard stage/GC hunters, like Hart or Nys.

It seems a waste to waste the shape he has shown in Poland, with so many important races still to come, to try to win Brico Cross in Lokeren or wtv is the first race of this year...

He posted an instagram story right after Plouay, as far as I remember thanking the team for the season and saying something like "cross is coming" or something along those lines.
