Teams & Riders Offical Wout Van Aert thread

So which team should have brought whom to Sanremo in previous editions for a faster Poggio?
I think UAE has got it very right this time bringing guys like Covi, Formolo and Ulissi. Sagan would bring a guy like Oss with him as his main domestique, which I think is just bad. I think UAE could even tap deeper into their team and bring a dude like Almeida but I guess it's not that great to bring guys that need to race Catalunya without interfering in their prep.

It also depends on the strategy, but rouleur types are good for bringing you to the foot of the Poggio, but they're quite useless on the Poggio. Ganna is good but he's one of the exceptions and he's supposed to be team leader himself.

That was what we saw last year. It made Poggio more tactical and stop and go with no one to set a hard pace. Mind you, Pogi rode it really poorly, attacking when they turned in to a headwind, rather than on the tailwind sections.
Yes and surely he's learned from that. I'm wondering if anyone will be able to hang onto him this year. Ala in top shape would but his form is doubtful now.
Should we rename this thread: "Wout won MSR once when Ala slipped his chain"?

Nerds really need to let go of Van eart vs MVDP its beyond stupid....

MVPD has kicked his ass entire life from youth and he has continued to doing so every time it matters in road too like at this point its beyond cringe and nerd worthy to even read the comparison he has kicked van aert ass entire career and still doing it. Van aert a stunning rider a generational talent but MVDP is and has always been a totally different beast!!

Nothing new hes done it their entier career...The top lvl of MVDP is simply unmatched and theres noone even close the the power hes able to put out when hes in top form its honestly scary how strong he is when hes on, just amazing!

I can’t tell if you’re satirizing that person posting this stuff in the race thread, or if you just forgot to switch over to your alt account

Van Aert positioned fairly poorly on the Poggio and had to put out some watts to catch back up to the front split.

Might be the illness he had during prep works to his favour though. He often seems to peak too soon for his objectives, and this year his objectives are more Flanders and PR. Should be interesting to see how he fares.

Could see him winning PR, not sure about Flanders.

Actually on the Poggio itself he was on the MvdP's wheel almost from the very bottom. Then MvdP and him were the last duo (van Aert was just ahead of Trentin who purposely dropped his wheel) that made it to the front group after Wellen's acceleration. And then after Pogi's attack, van Aert came out of Mathieu's wheel who patiently followed him and brought Mathieu to the front. And this move might've been quite decisive. Instead of just staying on MvdP's wheel, he overreacted and decided immidietaly to close on his own (at that moment he probably doubted Mathieu is able to do so).

I could swear that on the footage I was watching, Pogo and UAE we're drilling it on the front, van der Poel was right behind them, but van Aert was quite a few riders back and was having to make up distance. I'll have another look.

Edit - yes, I see I had the incorrect rider! Van der Poel wisely let van Aert close the gap. Is still think van Aert was not so good in his positioning, and of course he provided a reasonable springboard for van der Poel. Takes nothing away from van der Poel today, as he was sublime in tactics and power.

I do wonder whether van Aert will improve over the next few weeks, as I am sure his objectives are all about cobbles. But I'm not sure he will be where he needs to be ... time will tell.

I thought the same initially but it was actually SKA for Alpecin. When the split of 8 happened I think MVDP was 7th.

At this moment Cosnefroy closes the gap (he is later the one stuck behind Trentin when the latter let a gap open) with Van Aert on his wheel, and Wout then takes the wheel of Van der Poel.

check my ip he probably saw what i wrote and liked it...And honestly im not dogging van aert, van aert is a generational talent of all time he truly is and beyond that hes a true act BUT nothing of what was written is a lie there in fact its just decades of what actually have happened. NOT ever has van aert been able to match MVDP power cause he simple cant reach that level - NOONE can. If i said i have had conversation with Van Aert in real life about this im you would giggle but that too my friend is nothing but the truth.

Make no mistake tho, Van Aert is a champion and more importantly a class act but hes just never ever been able to reach MVDP lvl when hes in form - no shame cause noone has. Heck in strade he made peak alaphilipe look like a amateur..the power he can put out van aert know more than anyone in the world noone can match when he is on form its just simple as that. IF smacking POg, Ganna and van aert like this doesnt show it to you ur just in denial ...not that it needed to be showned as it has been showned countless of times before. their whole career in fact.

6 monument podiums =/= trash.
But cycling is all about the wins. And this very often confuses fans from other sports and they are like "how could he not sprint for that 3rd place?!"
All those podiums may look nice as statistics, but I suppose the main feeling that a cyclist like van Aert has about his "monument podiums" is frustration and regeret because of very often "being there" but not end up winning.

His 2nd place in de ronde won't be remembered like "wow he got 2nd in monument" but rather "he lost it to MvdP"

His 3rd places in San Remo and Liege also won't be remembered as any great results but as a defeats against two extraordinary performances of his big rivals.

I know he was won proper field sprints in the TdF, but are there any notable classics where Wout has won a sprint from a small group? I can think of many instances where he did not win from such a situation where one would have liked his chances, but am having a hard time coming up with positive examples.

GW and AGR, although the latter is debatable. Next to that his 2 up sprint against Alaphilippe in MSR and of course his great sprint against Laporte in E3 last year.
