Enthusiasts have the oppotunity to see Australia's unique handicap road racing in operation during UCI Week.
The Geelong Veteran Cycling Club (affiliated with ICF) hosts the annual Stan Howard Memorial Open on Saturday (02/10/2010) morning of the Elite Womens race at Paraparap, 25 kilometres southwest of the Geelong CBD. More than 125 male (over 35 years) and female (over 30) from Victoria and interstate wil race over 58 kilometres (5 laps) of the club's home circuit, starting at 0930 hours. Visitors will be made most welcome and refreshments will be available from the clubrooms after the race.
The Geelong Veteran Cycling Club has a group of riders called the SuperVets (aged over 60 for the boys and 55 for the girls) who race every Wednesday starting 1000 hours from the clubrooms at Paraparap. The race of Wednesday 29/09/2010 will be a handicap event over 35 kilometres (3 laps) with 30 or so riders aged 60 to 86. The "limit" riders will set off 22 minutes ahead of the "scratch" group with the rest of the field off various "marks" (groups of riders). A rider's "handicap" (ie. minutes start) is determined by the Club Handicapper and is based on the riders past performances. The age of the rider is NOT amongst the handicapper's criteria in assessing a rider's "mark". The handicapper's goal is to have everyone cross the finishing line together. Visitors will be made most welcome and refreshments will be available from the clubrooms after the race where post-mortems will be made and the handicapper much abused.
