Paris-Roubaix to get rid of Arenberg, cut down kms

It's on the main page:

Race organiser ASO may plan a different route for 2011

The mythical cobblestone sector of Wallers-Arenberg could again be omitted of the Paris-Roubaix race route. At the announcement of the Challenge Paris-Roubaix, a cyclosportive planned by race organiser ASO for next year, event director Joel Lainé released the information that should not become official until the announcement of the 2011 Paris-Roubaix route on December 15.

"We're not going to ride the Arenberg forest because the pros won't be passing over this sector, either," Lainé told Belgian Het Nieuwsblad.

Race director Jean-François Pescheux neither denied nor confirmed this. "We're able to do without Arenberg," he told La voix des Sports. "It would not have consequences on the competition. We can include other pavé sectors and skip Arenberg. But nothing will be decided before December 15."

The famous Arenberg forest passage, 2.4km long, is a key cobblestone sector in the 'Hell of the North'. Coming with 90 kilometres to go before the Roubaix velodrome, it has been included in the race since 1968. It was omitted only three times since then: in 1976, 1983 and 2005, when it needed to be restored.

Five years ago, Arenberg had been replaced by the Chemin des Postes between Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes and Famars (2.6kms long), and this is exactly what Pescheux could have in mind once again.

"I've always said that the Paris-Roubaix route doesn't have to be set in stone, that we will do race editions without Wallers-Arenberg and maybe even with the Chemin des Postes. What we do have planned for 2011 is to take one or two sectors away after Vertain, in order to cut down kilometres and arrive more quickly in Aulnoy."

Let's see what the forum thinks of this.

People, I agree with you that this is terrible, but please watch the potty mouth

Meh... Wouldn't have been my choice, but I can understand it. Its practically a crapshoot nowadays anyway that thing.

Roubaix will still have some excellent cobbled sections, and the compensated section will still be juicy.

this is pretty funny when you think about it.

Next time they decide to change the trophy from a cobblestone to a patch of asphalt?

Best post I've read all day! :D :D :D

I can see the trophy now, maybe they can put some road reflectors on it and a painted stripe.

In 2005, Arenberg was removed as the road was being worked on / renovated. But that was only one of a few years during the entire history of the tour.

The arrogance of the reason given is amazing--basically the guy is saying we can do whatever we want, so wer'e going to do whatever we want. Sounds like a French guy to me...:D But, hey I'm American so I'm an arrogant cowboy war-monger but I'm working towards becoming a socialist too--just give me time, it's happening.

Who says we like socialists?

Pardon? Wallers Arenberg has only been a part of Paris-Roubaix since 1968, which last time I checked is a little less than it's 108 year history...
The course has changed many times since it began, and while it's very disappointing to remove "The Trench" and I'd rather it still be there, they can always re-include it the following year...

While the word in question (the root word for Perot's giant wind-like sound coming from south of the US), is, to me, still one of the 4 letter no-no's, please check your current NY Times style guide or something, as I believe it may have entered the general lexicon.

I may be mistaken, but I believe it is allowed on radio and in print, certainly on TV, and it was allowed in both the high schools my son attended. One was in CA, the other in MA, where he graduated this year. This word may be in a state comparable to the words ain't and y'all when I was in grade school - passing from blue collar, earthy lingo to words defined in the dictionary.

The original expression, as used by jens_attacks and censured by Barrus, included not only sucking, but more specifically the sucking of testicles, if I'm not mistaken. What does the NYT style guide say about that?

Arenberg defines PR, sad to see this happening. There will probably be other places that will animate the race greatly, hopefully.

The Arenberg section of cobbles defines the modern version of the race, not the entire history of the race.

It could change the dynamic of the race as Arenberg is a landmark of the real start of the racing.

It is the hardest section of cobbles yes, and possibly the most famous, but from the editions of the race i've seen, the "real" racing starts just before the first section of cobbles, where people start fighting for the front position to be first onto the cobbles.

If I'm going next year, I'll ride the Arenberg anyway, it's like going to Rome and not visiting the Colosseum FFS.

There's nothing quite like seeing the peleton play "let's squeeze 200 riders from a 4 lane road into the entrance of Arenberg":)

I dont understand why they want to cut down the length, and if they want to arrive at the finish earlier why not start the race earlier?

Grand tour fans, and Schleck fans especially, like to say this a lot. So..

I took the top ten from this years edition of Paris Roubaix, and looked at their results for the last 6 editions.

Cancellera has 4 top tens and finished 6 of 6
Hushovd has 3 top tens and finished 4 of 5
Flecha has 5 top tens and finished 6 of 6
Hammond has 2 top tens and finished 5 of 5
Boonen has 6 top tens and finished 6 of 6
Leukemans has 2 top tens and finished 3 of 3
Pozzato has 2 top tens and finished 5 of 6
Hoste has 4* top tens and finished 6 of 6
Hinault has 1 top ten and finished 3 of 6
Roulston has 1 top ten and finished 1 of 2

That doesn't have the look of a crapshoot to me.

it seems that ASO loves those nowadays.they just designed probably the worst route in tour de france history.now they gonna eliminate arenberg and cut down kms from paris-roubaix.i wonder what's next.let's cut cote de la redoute.we'll still have cote de saint-nicolas anyway.

The most worrying bit it not the Arenberg thing, but the last sentence about reducing the length and getting rid of one or two pave sections without replacement...

Agreed and I'd like them to comment on that. I can't find any reason for it. Hope they won't dare.

The last sections are the hardest because all flat. Vertain is short however, why can't they remove that one. Could anyone name which sections are the target?

By the way, the last two season, the section of Wallers had been removed (don't mean Aremberg but the following one). Could it be reintroduced?
