Perth, Australia Cycling Recommendations

Hi -

First time poster here... hope the post is in the right category.

I'm probably moving to Perth for an extended period (from a very hilly section of California). Does anyone have recommendations for the type of bicycle to bring - road bike or mountain bike (assuming the need to focus on just one)? I guess a cyclocross bike should also be an option as well.

Thank you.

Perth riding

You will find the hills inland of Perth pretty similar to Cali hills. Head out to Kalamunda way and you have some really good X country riding.
The coastal plain of Perth is pretty flat, but windy, and makes for great road riding. And again, head into the hills for some very quiet road, with lots of ups and downs.
I would try both. You can really commute by bike most of the year in Perth, or all year if you are confident in wind and rain. MTBing is very good in the hills, and down the south west.
Be aware that in summer especially it gets windy, at some point you will be grinding into a head wind, just wishing you were home. Road ride to Mandurah is nice, tailwind both ways if you ride down for lunch.

as the poster above said, bring both!! (road & mountain bike)

if you have to choose, choose based on what you prefer to do most as i believe there's enough options for each to keep you satissfied.

though with mountain bike option, chances are that you'll have to travel to get to the best trails (though that could depend on where you're staying), whereas with a road bike once you're out of the house you're on your way.

do you know where you're staying?

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll try and bring both mtb and road, but might have to start with just the road bike for now. I'm not sure where I'll be living, but will be working in the CBD. I'm used to the wind, being from the Bodega Bay area of California. Winds are often in the 40-60 kph range during some seasons.

Bring the road bike.

I rode Adelaide to Perth. Ive never experienced such hardcore head winds again in all my travels and Ive riden thru BB enroute to SF from Seattle. Nice riding around there. Similar to Adelaide climate wise.

For me it's the ride around the rivers, from attadale looking over the river at the city looks awsome.

Windy but. Yep. Consistently consistant freo doctor when it's hot which brings in a head wind it seems everybtime... love my road bike here

Yep.. I usually do a nice 50k - 60k loop from my place, thru to Attadale, or Dalkeith etc, in to Fremantle for a coffee, then home.

Smaller ride I do about 45k up the freeway, in to Applecross and home.

Tho at the moment I'm laid up after leaving a lot of my skin and bike on the path about 2 weeks ago!
