We're back ladies and gents, for more Climbingo Times and yes I full deserve a red card for that pun.

Same rules as last time. Closest guess gets the like from the PWU. Votes are public and cannot be changed.

Previous climbing times

1998: 36'20 (Marco Pantani)
2017: 38'50 (Thibaut Pinot)
2020: 37'50 (Tao Geoghan Hart)

Weather forecast I see is pretty hot in the valley and a moderate cross/tailwind.

My prediction is that the record falls if Vingegaard wants it but he may care more about Piganzoli than triggering the W/kg cabal

Voted 36'40 to 37'00

Conditions look fast, but Visma won't use Piganzoli to pace. So Redbull and Hindley have to do it. Then the question is if and when Vingegaard attacks over the top. If he just sits on Hindley and Gall, the time could also be pretty slow.

The Pantani record is really high level, without perfect pacing Vingegaard won't be able to beat it in his current shape.

lemmen campenaerts and kuss are more than enough for the first five km before vingegaard attacks

Due to my climbing times predictions being usually spot on other users apply unfair tactics towards me so I won't post any accurate prediction this time. I like you guys so I will give you a hint: between half an hour and an hour.
As the OP I should have gone first, my mistake

I predict 36'02. I believe it wasn't one of Pantani's best records, and I believe they don't need Piganzoli doing a turn to break it.

Kuss is flying now and I expect Kuss to drop Eulalio already

This was a very fast time/number from Pantani but the stage was quite easy and Montecampione was better imo, him and Tonkov were full spitnik anyway so to beat it I think you would need the kind of performance you will be seeing in The Tour.

1883 m/h of VAM for 36' is pretty scary on an 8% climb with one false flat km. Even with eternal tailwind. This is almost Plateau de Beille'2024 level of climbing.

It is significantly lower altitude and significantly shorter

The last flat part is not in the segment. 36 minutes would be 1853 VAM according to my metrics.

Pantani did 1838 VAM, which is probably his highest for a longer climb. (Of course in good conditions and with a lighter bike than his older Alpe d'Huez record)

Pantani had a slightly lower VAM (1816 m/h) on a 42+ minute Mortirolo climb but that beast is almost 11% on average so much less energy wasted on non-gravity stuff.

The most logical heuristic shouldn't be "omg it was Pantani", it should really be that Hindley did it only 1'30 slower than the record in 2020.

There should be no doubt Hindley is significantly better now than in 2020, and Vingegaard has been putting a minute into him every time he's tried.

Guys, my hint #2: Vingegaard won't even have the fastest Piancavallo time tomorrow. Guess, why.

37'00 +/- 1 second.
We had a good stage today but the podium looks settled.

Were bikes even well geared for the Mortirolo back then?

It also fits with my observation that part of the climbing times of yesteryear was the insane motorpacing which would ofcourse be much reduced on the Mortirolo

Hindley has improved his consistency, but not his peak watts. he was quite inspired that day and climbing speeds were fast in 2020. I am also interested to see if he can improve his time from back then.

Mortirolo was in 1994 (heavier bike) and not a mountain top finish. It was also Pantani's first great climbing performance. The record on Mortirolo is from 1999 (1853 VAM).

Pantani's Giro in '94 could be compared to Pogacar's Giro in 2024. A new climbing level, but still before the total watt explosion.
