i thought the approach would count for more in the other direction than the stage length
The approach is better tomorrow, but I also consider the length of the climb in this. An uphill drag before a 40 minute climb is less of an issue than before a shorter climb.
Though I was a bit harsh with the 2017 stage, a -2 overall adjustment would have been possible, too.

The stages are just too different before the climb:

2017: 135k with 1700m of elevation gain
2026: 230k with 3300m of elevation gain

I also wonder about just super long distance versus shorter but more altitude meters, like Valmenier.
I count altitude meters more than distance. Distance is basically just time in the saddle (mostly), which I do think has an effect as well. Valmeinier was a very hard ridden stage in hot conditions and thus the gaps were huge at the finish.

On the other hand, if the altitude meters are not on a real climb, they can also be a bit fake sometimes.

Yeah we don't have a lot of super long climbing stages anymore. Pretty sure Ventoux in 2013 was very fast for the time which was also 220km before they started the climb.

But that's also Ventoux which is super heavily wind dependent.

The Ventoux in 2013 was indeed quite fast (relatively favourable wind though). But it also had the better approach with a slight downhill into Bedoin instead of the normal false flat uphill.

Froome and Quintana were just in good shape and did performances in line with the other climbs that race.

Hautacam 1994 is also an example where everyone was flying.

At the pace the Giro has been ridden this could be a seven hour stage, worth bearing in mind.

Simon Yates lost 11 minutes here for some reason after beating Van Der Poel and Dumoulin in a flat time trial. Then won the hardest stage in the race against all the GC guys and abandoned 2 days after.

I think they will go only slightly quicker than Nairo because the stage is really hard and Visma's leadout isn't their best, Kuss usually just looks around at the scenery like a cyclotourist for the first 2 weeks.

What you fail to mention is that Yates injured his knee in a crash before the Blockhaus stage.

Sneaky tactics by other predictors. After I posted 39' prediction some guys posted 39'05'' and 38'57'' making it almost impossible for me to be the closest and win this (just 4 seconds window). It's always better to predict at the end and maximize your winning interval.

Unless zhere`s a major headwind or Vinegard decides to ride tactically for most of the mountain this will for sure be a sub 39:40.

For sure if there was one ex-pro from the modern era who I wish would release a book talking about his career in detail, it's Simon. What an enigma.

I was trying to get a direct comparison between peak Quintana and Vinge/Pogi but I could not find any, so I will go by gut feeling and say he will go 1'30" faster, so 39:06
