Ponferrada to host 2014 Worlds

2014 World Championships to Ponferrada, Spain

UCI announces its recommendation for Spanish city

The 2014 road world championships will be held in Ponferrada, Spain. The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced today that the Spanish city would be the only one recommended to the Management Committee this fall.

The UCI announced that “the file received from the city of Ponferrada, in Spain, has been judged the best with a view to awarding the organisation of the 2014 UCI Road World Championships,” it said on its website.

Therefore, “the UCI has decided to propose only the candidature of Ponferrada to its Management Committee, at its meeting in Copenhagen (Denmark) in September, for the awarding of the 2014 edition of the World Championships.”

The city in north-western Spain is also under consideration for the 2015 UCI para-cycling road world championships.

Looking forward to the 2015 Worlds, Oman and Richmond, Va., USA, both made bids. “It should be recalled that the UCI Management Committee announced that only candidatures from outside Europe would be accepted for the 2015 edition of the Road World Championships in order to acknowledge the increasing interest of non-European countries in hosting this prestigious event," the UCI said.

The Worlds will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2011, Valkenberg, Netherlands, in 2012, Florence, Italy, in 2013 and Ponferrada, Spain, in 2014.

It might, just might, look exactly like this:

Course looks good if its true. But anyway...

I can already see it - Valverde winning rainbowjersey in style on home ground.
After winning it in 2012 and 2013 of course. :)

I am so happy when this season is over and we see him again.

lumpy one à la Mendrisio or mountainous one à la Sallanches/Duitama?
Just asking, don't know the region.

Depends how long they make the circuit. Could make it a legitimately mountainous one, but that would require a slightly longer circuit; they could feasibly throw in some climbs that are tougher than Mendrisio on a relatively short circuit, but a properly mountainous route would need a longer circuit.

Of course, now they'll serve up a pure flat circuit just to annoy me given the potential for so many different varieties of course that the city has.

Oman it is so... With the ASO backing the Tour of Oman and the money they're likely to have behind their bid it's hard to see them not winning the bid - although if they genuinely wanted to promote the sport Richmond would be the best option.

Really happy for this (It's my city)

Lost of good choices to do a good route, the best is "El circuito de Lombillo" (Vuelta 2008):

By the way, next to Ponferrada there are losts of HC colls (Ancares, Morredero, Pena Trevinca, Redondal, Penon...) have a look in this report of Plataforma Recorridos Ciclistas with the best options to design a Vuelta stage:

Looks like the time trial will have nine kilometers of climbing, finishing in San Cristóbal de Vadueza.

The area has a lot of potential. The mix of 30 flat km and 9 climb km will be an interesting show.

I don't know, I'm all for a mountain WC every now and then, but a mountain TT... I mean, do we want Purito to wear the ITT rainbow jersey for a year?

But he would be 2-3 mins behind from the 1st 30 km, so a ITTer who can climb.

Martin - no
Wiggins - yes
Fabian- not really
Bert- no
Jack - no
Porte who knows

But a few of the riders who were not there can

Evans and Contador come to mind.

I'm saving my pennies already. It's probably as close as it will get from home on the next few years. So i wouldn't forgive myself, if I missed this one.

ITT with a 9km climb doesn't make me more or less excited. (But then ITT's are not my thing) I just want a decent parcours for the road race.
