Confirmed it seems... Can they appeal?

Well it completely ruins the intrigue of the battle for GC in the Giro. That's very bad. There are rules on paper and there are actively and consistently enforced rules. If this is of the latter type, it's fair, even if it is hugely damaging wrt the entertainment value of the Giro.

If it's the type of rule violation that is not usually enforced, it's absurd. Cycling shooting itself in the foot.

Lol, the race jury just killed the race

Pretty much, aru will get destroyed by contador in the ITT. And uran is nothing in the mountains.

Kinda sad.

Really? Does that include or exclude the time loss for the stage.

That excludes the time loss during the stage. Has this never happened before during a race? I have to assume it has. I think the fact that Porte made mention of it and there is ample photographic evidence to support it, they (UCI) felt compelled to enforce the rule. Puts a mark on this GIRO and I can't imagine any of the GC guys or RCS are happy about this outcome.

what a joke of a race

This was done by the UCI buddy, not the Giro organizers. Nice job with trying to start a conspiracy though

Now jury (Italians) just need to find a way to get rid of Contador. They thought the shoulder issue would put him out, but it seems they will have to find another way to hand the victory to Aru. They have probably infected Uran as well.

On a more serious note. I am not a fan of Porte, or Sky for that matter and I do believe that made life easier for Contador, but penalizing a rider like that is just stupid, and it takes all fun out of the race. I would be pissed.

Thinking about it. I get the point of the rule. They're trying to make sure riders don't form an alliance or whatever?

But then what about tiralongo helping contador in the vuelta?

It's impossible to exclude that. And 2 minutes is way too much.

But i guess that now no one will ever do that again, that's the only good thing of this.

Well, then it sucks. I think it's up to the teams to decide their tactics. If teams or riders want to form alliances, it's their choice.

Porte's Giro is pretty much over now. Maybe he should just focus on winning the Tour with Froome.

It's complete nonsense. The rule itself is anti-sportsmanship, so I ask on what purpose does it even exist? And what should be UCI's beef in such a matter? It's also giving RCS and Il Giro the middle finger, as it ruins part of the race. Organization can't be happy. What do these people wish to accomplish by being overzealous. A bloody promotion?

That said, the giro organisers decided to withdraw the convoy as soon as Porte punctured. Would that have happened if Aru had been in exactly the same situation?

12.1.040
3.3. Rider taking off the mandatory helmet disqualified and 100 disqualified and 50

Here is a way to get rid of Contador but not all rules apparently need to be enforced.
Oh well, rest of Giro will be a shitstorm. Can't see Sky not reacting to this

What do you mean, there were cars between Porte and the peloton the whole time and he got a lot of drafting from them
