So finally the iconic Alpe d' Huez is back (after 4 years) and we can witness a historic climbing time. It's 13.8 km at 8.1% (elevation gain a bit over 1100 meters). Pantani's record is 36'50'' (1995). Can Teddy smash it? Or will he babysit Del Toro? It's also possible that the UAE illness could influence him (Yates and McNulty are struggling big time). Let's predict the performance on one of most iconic climbs at the Tour.

If the Mexican is fresh and gives him the green light - then under 36:00.
If not - between 37:30 - 38:00.
 
not many riders left able to do a good pace and providing draft

will need an early surge
 
Evenepoel with comparable legs to Solaison should be right around the record. So even without Pogacar it could be broken.

If Pogacar is healthy he will probably attack after 10 minutes of Red Bull / Decathlon pacing and do a time of 35'35.

and Remco had a LOT left in the tank after Solaison
 
So we are doing the 13.8km and not the 14.4km. There seems to be debate over what the record is, as different sites have the record at 36'40 and some at 36'50.

I predict 37'08", as I don't see Tadej going from the jump for the record, and instead its left to the pace making of Red Bull.
 
Tough poll. Voted close but no cigar (just over 37').

But if Pogi, Jonas and Remco could all beat Pantani's 1998 Plateau de Beille record in 2024 then surely the Alpe d'Huez record is vulnerable this Tour. I hope Pog and UAE's sickness doesn't spoil it.

AdH weather forecast looks good - dry and 22C maximum. Its a short stage which helps but obviously will depend how it is ridden. I guess a fast time will require an attack or fast pacing from near the bottom.
 
Voted closed but no cigar. I think Pogi might be feeling a little under the weather or over his form curve, which might also be factoring into him deciding to prioritize Del Toro's position over further stage wins. So I think he will set the pace for Del Toro. Remco might attack, but even then I think the time will be determined by Del Toro or Remco's abilities, not Pogacar's.

I hope I'm wrong. Even though I don't really cheer for Pogacar, I'd rather see what he can do in his prime going all out.

Yeah but it's situational. Evenepoel in a MTT in peak shape could do it, or in a Solaison type Pogacar draft, but if you take Pogacar out then you need Evenepoel to do something that he's never done before (team lead out from the bottom) - which, given the race situation, is also pointless and high risk. Climbing times are so much more than w/kg.
