If there are no STI issues then go hydraulic, no question. Big improvement in lever feel, modulation and pad life.
This deal on Avid Elixir 1 is hard to beat at under $80 for the pair if you want a 140mm rear rotor. The main things you miss out on compared to more expensive models are the two-piece bar clamp and pad contact point adjustment:

Haven't tried the Elixir, but like you I have had a good run from Avid. Am still running a pair of 2006 Juicy 3 on my full sus bike and they work like new. Apart from replacement pads, they have only needed bleeding once in all that time, and that was due to operator brain fade not brake fade (popped a piston out by absent-mindedly squeezing the lever with no pads in the caliper, when replacing pads at the top of a singletrack with about 300m of descent

Shimano 2011 and later XTR and 2012 XT brakes and Formlua R1 seem particularly nice (on friends' bikes), but you're not going to find them as cheap.
