Gazzetta headline asks "What will Contador do?" but there's a contract in place so they'll have to get along or things get expensive

La Gazzetta Dello Sport says Riis sells his Saxo team to Oleg Tinkov, cites Danish anti-doping investigation as a catalyst to speed up sale

Wonder if Bjarne got more than 1c per dollar , for " goodwill "?

More unemployed Pro World Racers ?

Riis could net a few mil here... wait for Tinkov to bail and buy it back on the cheap. Tinkov is playing with fire if he wants to own the team but have Riis and Saxo (who are one) still there. If Tinkov is buying I think they will be gone completely.

I really doubt Riis is goinfg to sell and if he did it would not be to Tinkoff.

If he did sell, it would most likely be to Lars Seier, the co-owner of Saxo and a very rich man in his own right. He is cyclingnuts and good friends with Riis.

The real question is who Tinkov will hire to run it... Bruyneel? Gianetti? Tchmil?

Tinkov could give a home to Cobo, Horner, Leinders etc.

Could make for an exciting 2014 season.

Team Saxo press representative Allan Jørgensen:

"Normally we don't comment on these types of stories but I would like to refute that Tinov has bought the team. This is also Bjarne Riis' comment"

No comment from Bjarne himself.

Perhaps former dopers should not be allowed to run a cycling team, whether Ras, Riis, JV, Vino or any other, the problem is though it wont stop non sanctioned or confessed ones like Eki

Which is the core problem at the heart of cycling, if you throw out the sanctioned, that does not assure you will have guys who didn't dope and are not hardcore like Ekimov.

I would rather have a guy who admit's and has their past out there than a guy who is still hiding stuff.

Also people talk about outsider,s with no connections to cycling running teams and one such guy was Bob Stapelton who came in at T-Mobile/High Road and tried to change the culture yet how many people believe that team were clean.

If you were to actually look at a current PT team with the least suspicious staff/riders, it would probably be Argos-Shimano.

Agreed, but it would be even better to have someone who never doped at all

Yes but considering that most riders over 40 rode in the 00s, that is very unlikely. How do you get guys with experience of pro cycling(non doping) at around age 40.

As I mentioned Argos-Shimano have the least dodgy staff at PT level and yes they have mostly guys who were not associated with pro cycling but they also have the odd staff member with a dodgy past.

I would hate to see Riis get out of the sport with a big pay packet!

Want to see him out of the sport but after being punished for enabling doping on his teams.

Rock Racing were underrated imo.

It was like, Spearmint Rhino meets Mellow Johnnies meets Grindr meets USPS meets Yellow Rose.

So it seems it is official now: Riis sells his team to Tinkov.

Reports suggest he will stay on as a DS on the team. This I don't understand. He certainly doesn't need the money. He has a potential big blow out coming up with the investigation of his national federation, so it would only be natural for him to take this opportunity and get the hell out of there before they force him. Finally, why does he feel the need to work for a guy with whom the cooperation was so bad the first time around that they ended it??

It seems he made a huge mistake accepting Tinkov's money the first time. I don't think he wanted to sell it, after all the guy fought so hard over 10 years to keep his team alive. Somehow Tinkov must have had him in his pocket, either the team really couldn't survive without the money, or he had something else on him. Now he maybe just wants to stay on to try and save what is possible.

Ultimately Tinkov still needs someone to run the team and Riis is as good as anyone. It's probably too late to jettison an outsider in (Tinkov entering the fray is damage enough to the stability of the team).

So Riis continues as General manager. With a nice contract, and a good load of money for selling the team. Doping pays:eek: Big time!

Riis said that he will have more time to deal with the riders now, will be interesting to see how much better he can prepare Contador, for this years tour. Hopefully a lot better, so we at least can get a race.
