Hi

Iv made up my mind to get the Planet X TDF limited ed. road bike.

http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPTDF/planet_x_pro_carbon_tour_de_france_limited_edition

And then comes the Q. about size..

My current ride is a 59cm Effective toptube XL. But i had to change the stem from 120 to 80mm for a more proper fit.

So.. L or XL?
Im really put off by the difference in Seat tube range C-C and top Tube lenght. Is ths the same thing?

Whatdoyou think?

I did the Cometitive cycling fit calc. and came with these results:

My input

Gender M
Inseam 92.5 cm
Trunk 65 cm
Forearm 35 cm
Arm 66.5 cm
Thigh 66.5 cm
Lower Leg 60.5 cm
Sternal Notch 156 cm
Total Body Height 189 cm

The Competitive Fit - The Eddy Fit - The French Fit
Seat tube range c-c 59.9 - 60.4 61.1 - 61.6 62.8 - 63.3
Seat tube range c-t 61.8 - 62.3 63.0 - 63.5 64.7 - 65.2
Top tube length 54.4 - 54.8 54.4 - 54.8 55.6 - 56.0
Stem Length 11.5 - 12.1 10.4 - 11.0 10.6 - 11.2
BB-Saddle Position 82.4 - 84.4 81.6 - 83.6 79.9 - 81.9

Whan I buy a frame its reach, stack, and saddle to BB distance are the important parameters - and secondarily standover height.

Of course non-frame parameters also come into play such as crank length, stem length, bar selection, and seat post setback.

For such a tall guy you've got the arm length of somebody much smaller. You will have to go with the (XL) frame and use a shorter stem 100mm or less, and shallow drop short reach bars. You'd be sacrificing too much by trying to size just to the top tube length alone with the (L).

I don't know what kind of bike is your current bike but I think that it is not proper for you, either as frame size or as fit (at least on the top tube/depends the geometry of the frame).

Going from 120mm stem to one of 80mm, which is a marginal stem size for handling properly a road bike (not a recomended size even for women. I personally have 100mm stem on my bike) shows that the top tube is rather long for you, or for your body's flexibility.

This calculator gives good results but doesn't take into account the flexibility that perhaps someone has or has not. If you are not able to bend over the handlebar, then think of going for the smaller size and use a longer stem. :)

The Bike comes with shallow drop handlebars. So, im guessing XL with a short Stem, but would it not be better with the L and a longer stem?

This is my current frame with the 80mm stem and aprox. 10-12 cm drop from seat to handlebars

FRAME SIZE (CT) 55CM
TOP TUBE MM (A) 590
SEAT TUBE MM (C) 490
DROPOUT 130
CHAIN STAYS MM (D) 408
HEAD TUBE ANGLE (Q1) 73°
SEAT TUBE ANGLE (Q7) 73°
HEAD TUBE LENGTH (L) 195

Not really, as GM said above, your arms are a bit short for someone your size. You will get a better fit with the XL as it suits your inseam measurement better and you won't need as many spacers under the stem to bring the bars up to suit your arm length. If you are happy riding with an 80mm stem at the moment I'd go for the XL.

How do you handle such a long bike with such a short stem?
Don't you feel tension on your hands?
It would be better to go for a L sized bike with a longer stem. 90 or even 100 mm :)
