Roger Hammond contract not renewed with Garmin?

Why? Apparently he is big time anti doping and this had led to trouble with various teams in his past so why was he not kept at TeamClean?

Educated guy, talented, 3rd in a Paris Roubaix, hard man with 7 National cyclo cross championships to his name.

Why did Vaughter's not like him?

Is it because he wouldn't get with Garmin's 'program'?

interesting interview talking about Hammond here

Any one know more?

Garmin are a racing team. They are in the sport to win races. Their don't just hand out contracts to people who share the same perspective as them when it comes to doping - they select people who share that perspective AND give them the chance to win as many races as possible. A 38 year old Hammond who hasn't shown enough recently doesn't fullfil the second criteria, and it doesn't matter how much he fits the first - it is certainly necessary, but is not sufficient.

Do you expect the team to just give anyone who shares their position on doping a contract regardless of their ability or usefulness to the team?

Quite a few riders in the team did nothing last year.

Allegedly in cycling you are not over the hill at 38 anymore quite a few in the peloton still riding.

Jeremy Hunt, Horner, Leipheimer, Voight and Vino to name a few.

Hammond started in the pro peloton late, aged 26. So he is hardly burnt out.

I dont expect teams to hire only winners, but a guy like Hammond imo was not finished yet.

I doubt there are many in the peloton who share Hammond's views on doping and maybe that is realistically why his contract was not renewed. At 38 you need more than talent to continue.

There are riders who perform more roles in a team than going for the win, domestiques, rouleurs etc.

I had hoped he would've got a contract somewhere, seems a nice guy. Only two years ago he was 4th and 7th in Roubaix + Ronde.

Klier is still there (two years younger, but still the same role - road captain, experienced cobbled rider who can teach others), and aside from a couple of 5th places at Gent-Wevelgem he hasn't done anything for years.

So you're saying 38 IS over the hill unless you are doping.;)

Does this mean all anti-doping riders must be offered contracts or else. Sky coulda snapped him up he is a Brit and all. I see this as looking to invent an issue where there is none.

This goes against the OPs own mantra that if you rode for certain teams, then you were definitely jacked. Hammond rode for Discovery Channel(2 seasons) and T-Mobile/Columbia(2 seasons).

I have never heard anything to suggest that Hammond is very anti-doping, where is this evidence coming from. Using the same stick that is often used against David Millar, JV and others, why has someone so anti-doping never spoke out about it openly? why have they never told us what was going on at Discovery?, have they reported it to the UCI? Surely Hammond is as much a part of the ometra as others and equally worthy of our scorn.

Did the OP also know that Hammond was opposed to the Haematocrit test when it was around declaring that the 50 limit was too random and unfair and it could destroys people's reputation unfairly or perhaps I am mixing him up with Jeremy Hunt but I think it was Hammond.

How could a guy finish on the podium of Paris-Roubaix in an era when doping was still rampant. Surely impossible.

This is an epic troll fail by the OP in an effort to attack Garmin/JV but once you apply the OPs normal standards for attacking riders to Hammond, the hypocrisy is clearly ridiculous.

I asked a question. Plenty of posters know more about what is going on in the UK scene where Hammond has returned too.

The interview i linked talks about his anti doping stance and therefore i asked the question about why a 'clean' team could not find a ride or better a position for an educated experienced road man like Hammond.

See more into it than you wish too.

Not gonna do a Dr Maserati on your post and pick it to bits as you said you see me purely as a troll. You didn't mind my 'trolling' in your favour on the JTL thread.

Ah well. Buona sera.

2 of the guys you named actually win races, while one is gonna ride (donno what word to use) as president for his own Country sooner or later (and with this I mean he actually own the team).

The other 2 guys fit much better your example.

This is not a "scratch my back club", I agree with people on some things only to have different views on others, thats life. I dont agree with you on your agenda against Garmin and the lengths you go to try and denigrate their reputation. You are basing Hammonds anti-doping stance on what some journalists say but if the same was said about JV by a journo, you would be claiming the journos were up his *** and it was all PR BS.

I am not too worried about Dr Maserati either, the fact that JTL outclimbed Poels in Murcia and a week later Poels was climbing with the tops guys in T-A, a World Tour race suggests I was closer to the mark on that one.
