Shimano Ultegra 6700 Shifters - Switcheroo

So my right shifter on a set of Ultegra shifters got dinged up in a wreck awhile back. The shifting performance now skips a cog here and there, and generally has trouble settling in. I almost never gear out of the big ring with my left shifter, and I suddenly wondered whether it is mechanically possible to rig the left shifter to control the rear derailleur, and set the right to control the front. Not having taken the two apart and inspected the inside, I'm unaware of any structural differences which would preclude such a switch.

Anyone have any insight? I suspect that the ultimate answer is that I will have to just buy a new shift set to fully resolve the issue.

You can't switch the shifters. The right shifter has ten clicks for the rear cogs and the left shifter has two clicks (excluding trim) for the double chainrings.

That certainly would exclude re-wiring things to have the left control the RD. Thanks for the reply.

hate to say it but it is another reason to think campy...altho I use shimano as well on a setup...recently had Busted Knuckle (who does GREAT work) rebuild a 95 (I think it was from that year) campy record 8 speed shifter...he put in a 9 speed cog as well and the thing is working like a swiss clock...

Mille grazie...

I can't help but think that although the shifter might have suffered cosmetic damage, the problem described is more likely to be a bent derailleur hanger.

Go to your LBS and get them to check it out before forking out for new shifters.

I actually have since transferred the shifters over to an entirely new bike. I've managed to get the shift performance pretty good, though it is a little jumpy from cog 2 to 3 on the way up (on the way down works crisply).

The rubber hood is damaged, and I don't particularly care about the aesthetic, more the mechanical element functioning correctly.
