Shimano UN55 into Steel BB Shell.

I would / should post this in Workshop and Maintenance.....but it's a ghost town in there....cold and dark...no one home

OK - so I have the bog standard Shimano UN55 Square Taper BB going into a steel frame BB shell (Touring Bike)

This guy - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/nz/en/shimano-un55-square-taper-bottom-bracket/rp-prod71369

Two Questions: -
1) The non drive side is plastic....can you get a metal / stronger alternative?
2) Grease or Lock Tight and then torque to spec.....which one please?

Cheers.

I'm surprised that plastic is used.

Thanks.

I've installed quite a few of these in my time...usually just grease and torque to spec etc.

I should have been more clear.....this is for my touring bike - looking for rock solid longevity and durability.
I'm OK with the plastic piece, but if I can find a stronger alternative, I'll take it.

I don't usually loctite these guys in, but wondering if some 242 would be a good idea, or just stay with grease?

1)..yes, find a decent LBS that has some toasted UN series BBs in the 'box out back'.
2)Grease, never 'glue'...also grease inside LH cup.

From memory the ultegra spec of the same year had a metal non drive side cup. Looking at the pic of the time in your link it is a metal cup.

Thanks Lynton - I'll start hunting down a metal non drive side cup soon.

The link I posted is of the UN55 and it most definitely has a plastic non drive side screw in cup.....which is what I'm trying to replace.

Cheers.
