We all know that Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome are both set to lead Sky at the Giro and the Tour. But they don't appear to have a clear leader for the Vuelta yet. So I decided to conduct a poll to see who the fine denizens of the CN forums think should lead the stage racing powerhouse in Spain.

Personally right now I'd go with Richie Porte he was otherworldly at Paris-Nice and looked fantastic at the Criterium International. For me that yellow jersey from Paris-Nice puts him ahead of Uran and Henao who are the two other most likely candidates.

Should be joint leadership between Uran and Henao, see which one of them goes best and support that one (will probably be Henao I think). Porte, Froome, and Wiggins will all ride the Tour, and thus (as long as they don't crash out early) will be too tired to contend in the Vuelta.

But as I said in the Pais vasco thread, this is Sky. Nothing is certain with them. They lost the 2011 Vuelta by making Froome work for Wiggins, and Wiggins probably truly believes he can win all 3 grand tours in a single season.

I would usually expect a poll to include team leaders, you know, JUST in case they don't perform in the Giro or TDF and have to go the the Vuelta to save their season. Do you know something we don't;)

Pretty much agree with the joint leadership role. If they were to be given it at least this time they won't be doing work in the sprints like they did for Cav in the Giro last year. That was another ridiculous decision on Sky's part at the time.

As for Porte he said in an interview after his P-N win on Col d'Eze that he would be looking to lead at the Giro next year when he got questioned on it.

Tiernan-Locke will ride it, but he certainly needs to improve a lot from so far this season to be the leader, so it will propably be Uran and Henao as Froome, Wiggins and Porte will very likely not start, unless they somehow miss other races due to injury. Henao I think will certainly skip the TDF so he is pretty sure to start, I guess Uran might still end up in the TDF but most likely not, so they will propably both do the giro/vuelta-double and be joint leaders in the Vuelta.

Also David Lopez has looked strong so far this season and should be a strong rider for the Vuelta, but propably mostly as a helper for the two columbians.

Yeah can't see Porte riding the Vuelta. Probably one of the Colombians. Froome won't back up again after his last Vuelta. Vuelta should be a good race, more open than the other two.

Last week Wiggins said he was thinking about it.

Though that's probably not what he actually meant.

No he's riding the Tour. Froome doesn't know yet.;)

I thought the last two editions of the Vuelta have been really good. Froome Cobo battle in 2011 and the three way fight last year. Great racing.

I agree.

vuelta was by far the best grand tour last year, not even close. and 2nd best the year before but could have been best if they made the final week less like the first week of thE tour.

Its mostly luck that they got the good competition in 2011 and that they got contador who spiced things up last year. But also im starting to like the Vuelta more because of the crowds, which seem to be getting bigger. and spain might be buying more into the race now. well see if it was just the contadsor effect last year but they had their highest ratings last year and for the first time ever ratings (in spain ofcourse) for thE vuelta were higher than for the tour.

Uran, Henao or Porte, I think one of them will be the chosen, but depends on many factors. If Wiggins is strong on Tour (as domestique), Porte can relax a little bit and save his best for Vuelta. By other side, between Uran and Henao, one of them will be the Wiggin's last helper on Giro and I think the other can be a option to Vuelta.

I can't see Uran or Henoa being competitive in a Grand Tour since they are pretty crap when it comes to ITTs, but the Vuelta has the least ITT kms of all the GTs, so if either of them are to be given a GT to lead it has to be the Vuelta. Perhaps Giro 2014 would be more suited to Porte.

Maybe Sky's old longterm plan was for Froome to lead the Vuelta in 2011, Uran/Henoa in 2012 and Porte in 2013, but everyone was pushed back a year because of Wiggin's 2011 TdF crash...

Henao has alredy been given go ahead he will be the leader.

What's the point of the poll? :p

And we have seen, you can't do Tour - Vuelta both at high level, so that clearly rules porte out...

Uran is not consistent enough, leaving the best and most obvious choice of Henao..

That's a healthy sign for Spanish cycling and may even attract some new sponsors. Fans also like a good battle between their own countrymen : Coppi , Bartali, Hinault Fignon, Anquetil Poulidor etc and last year the Vuelta had three of it's own vying for victory. It captures interest even with the general public and of course some get behind the rider from their own region.
