The look could be improved with a nice paint job.

There is wasted material in those square corners.

I agree about the square corners but I like it. I've always thought that a crank with this shape would optimize the amount of material used/stiffness/weight. But I'm a form follows function type of guy and really appreciate when an items aesthetics are influenced more by optimization than visual appeal. I would say to shrink the spider/plate so that you can use solid rings and still have access to the bolt holes for functionality/ease of use.
