Sparkassen Münsterland Giro, 03-10-2013 (1.1)

Sparkassen Münsterland Giro, 03-10-2013 (1.1)

moving on from Italy and straight to Germany where this race will take place:

and could provide a bit of entertainment before going back for the last monument of the season.

One of the Sparkassen sponsor the race. How many different Sparkassen are there? I do not know.

Anyway as the last few winners show, we are talking a few minutes of action at the end most likely:

2012 KITTEL Marcel
2011 KITTEL Marcel
2010 VAN LEIJEN Joost
2009 SARAMOTINS Aleksejs
2008 GREIPEL André

but perhaps Tony Martin can surprise with a solo attack with 40km to go. Some other players:

Kittel naturally
Wagner, Boom
The Poppel boy(s)
Sutterlin
Zabel, Van Baarle

and many more outlined here: http://www.cyclingfever.com/editie.html?detp=view&_ap=startlijst&editie_idd=MjM5ODI=

Official race site: http://www.sparkassen-muensterland-giro.de/

They ride out at 11:35 and finishes around 16:00 (CEST).

Markus FTW.

Who are you trying to kid?

I know the German scene is a total disaster area over the last few years and we should want as many races protected as possible, but races like this don't help anybody.

Apart from Henninger Turm and early GP Schwarzwald (that one did not seem to have a deep field though) I can't really recall any decent 1-day races in Germany.

Henninger Turm was (still is) a quality race. In terms of top level racing you're right, although the Rund um Köln has plenty of potential to be an interesting rouleur's race if they didn't add the extra circuits of the flat finishing loop. There used to be some good races in the DDR, the Rund um Berlin was pretty tough with all the rough roads, Kopfsteinpflaster and Plattenwege and the Großer Sachsenpreis looks like it was a killer.

There are 422 different Sparkassen in Germany at the moment according to wikipedia. As they are mainly based on local or regional entities they are quite small, but also robust. And play an important role in sponsoring sport events. The sadly defunct Sachsen-Tour or Hessen-Rundfahrt have been sponsored by the regional Sparkasse as well.

that's exactly what happened, Veelers, Keisse, van Emden, van Steayen and van Baarle are ~3 minutes in front with ~10k to go

yep, this is one of those cases where the riders break the "rules" and ride:

1 Jos Van Emden (Belkin)
2 Tom Veelers (Argos-Shimano)
3 Iljo Keisse (Omega Pharma-Quick Step)
4 Michael Van Staeyen (Topsport Vlaanderen)
5 Dylan Van Baarle (Rabobank Development)
6 Albert Timmer (Argos-Shimano)
7 Rick Zabel (Rabobank Development)
8 Moreno Hofland (Belkin)
9 Jan Dieteren (Team Stölting)
10 Theo Reinhardt (Rad-Net ROSE Team)
