State of the Peloton 2026

Today was impressive. They just kept sprinting without respite up the final climb under heat.
In days gone past, their would be a lull in the action. Now they just kept going till the finish.

Seixas short climbing efforts are better than his long ones, he still beat Vingegaard and Pogacar from 2023 here who themselves were going light speed and he’s only about 12. Then again so did everyone else, the level at the moment is a bit baffling to be honest.
Yeah, the speed of the peloton is not of this earth.

One part of the cocktail apparently -

And so for the first time at this year’s Tour, riders from one — unnamed — team will aim to consume up to 20g of lactate per hour. Each sachet of ExoLactate gel contains 5g, along with 40g of carbohydrates. At a rate of four gels per hour — routine for a mountain stage — each rider would be ingesting more than eight times the volume of lactate produced by the body during intense efforts.

At present, a limited supply of gels has been manufactured — a trial batch numbering in the low tens of thousands — before general release after the Tour. When samples were sent to several teams, one demanded exclusivity. Despite the manufacturers’ initial refusal, the team simply offered to buy the entire supply at the going rate. This was unlikely to have been a cheap investment. It is expected that the gels will retail at about £5.
.In 2022, Tadej Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG trialled a lactate solution mixed with 120g of carbohydrate, but not only did it contain insufficient lactate to be effective, but the riders also disliked the taste. “We’re not inventing lactate,” Viribay says. Their trick has been to create a product that athletes can actually stomach.

The mention of hydrogen ions in the article reminded me of the "Ammortal Chamber" (see https://nypost.com/2025/08/05/health/my-shocking-experience-inside-a-160k-ammortal-chamber/ ) which uses molecular hydrogen (H2), which is supposed to be good for many a thing (https://www.frontiersin.org/journal...logy/articles/10.3389/fcell.2023.1283820/full )

I'm guessing that guys are also drinking hydrogen-rich water.

edit add- for those wanting all the bio details- the man behind (or one of the men) ExoLactate, Aitor Viribay describes the science behind the product on a video at

Lactate gels clearly work, otherwise, Pogacar wouldn’t have used one yesterday. There can’t be any PR angle to it since the UAE is sponsored by Enervit. Using a product from a different company, especially a small one like this, can only be to enhance performance. The UAE has also bought up all the lactate gels produced so far.

what I can imagine is, for example, RedBull not deluded or sad. they know what their riders levels are. UAE cannot be defeated. it's not Lipo-Remco having a day off. it's Pog and his mates being sputniks, and there's nothing they can do about it

Pogacar didn’t use one. Listened to a podcast with someone who even contacted Enervit. There wasn’t any lactate in the gel.

Thanks, but for some reason I cannot access it on my phone.

No biggie, guess there's gonna be tons of articles on edible lactate in the future.
Another article with info on Exolactate -

Currently, the main limit to increasing the energy available during a competition is not the amount of fuel a cyclist carries, but the body's ability to absorb it. Carbohydrates depend on specific transporters that become saturated when the amounts are very high.

Lactate uses other transport mechanisms, known as MCT. According to the working hypothesis defended by the creators of ExoLactate, this would allow for a complementary pathway to glucose and fructose, potentially increasing the total energy availability during exercise without relying solely on traditional transporters.

Fastest ever Tour stage - nothing to see here!
Giro stage 15 this year also a 51 km/h stage so the porridge is working boys. Nah, it's the aero socks, you know.
Edit - add- props to Velo for predicting (though it's not totally unexpected) that regardless of the heat, it'll be manically furious at the Tour.

tbf yesterday it was cooler, rain at the start and the wind helped. previous record was 50.3 kmh in 1999, 190 km stage

So UAE and Pogi are not on the ExoLactate but Enervit's “Lactate Gel Mix”
https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-racing/tour-de-france/pogacar-lactate-tour-de-france/
Team UAE Emirates-XRG confirmed Thursday it’s been trialing a world-first lactate and carbohydrate drink made by team partner Enervit since 2024, the year Pogačar won the third of his four yellow jerseys.
The lactate-carbohydrate product has now been finalized and launched. The Enervit “Lactate Gel Mix” is being drunk by Pogačar this summer as he piledrives toward a historic fifth Tour title.
Velo broke the news last week that secretive “ExoLactate” gels are being trialed by one team at this Tour de France.
ExoLactate founder Aitor Viribay confirmed to Velo on Thursday that he is not involved in the Enervit product being drunk by Pogačar.
However, Viribay was not able to comment on whether it’s UAE Emirates-XRG that bought exclusive rights to his brand’s lactate-carbohydrate product due to confidentiality agreements.
UAE Emirates-XRG and Enervit revealed Thursday it tapped up leading lactate professor, George Brooks. The University of California researcher has been leading the way in lactate research for more than 40 years.

Brooks led Enervit’s development of the newly launched C2:1PRO Lactate Gel Mix – a powder that includes a whopper 90 grams of carbs and 10 grams of lactate.

Team nutritionist Gorka Prieto – the man who works directly with Pogačar – said the fininshed product was a process of continual trial, error and finessing.

Team riders provided feedback on prototype batches throughout the two-year development process.
