He probably read it on the ITA's website from the first of July,
Increased focus on the endogenous steroid markers measured in blood serum as part of the steroidal module of the ABP, and on the endocrine module of the ABP to better detect markers of human Growth Hormone (hGH) abuse.

On Tuesday morning, Red Bull team manager Ralph Denk confirmed that the entire team was woken at 10pm and all riders tested as he noted the inconvenience could affect the team's recovery.
Now, a Le Parisien report says Paul Seixas also got a visit from the International Testing Agency (ITA) as the Decathlon CMA CGM team underwent tests at 8pm on Monday evening. At 9pm, Groupama FDJ United were tested while Red Bull and Picnic PostNL subject to a 10pm visit.

Now we wait ...
 
well with the time WADA usually takes, we might get the results by Lombardia or Guanxhi :sweatsmile:
Luckily, WADA is not involved, but everything is done behind closed doors with lawyers present normally, so it might well be dragged out until after the season (unless, as with Froomey's "problem", it gets leaked to the media).

Hansen on Eurosport, the CPA is not very happy about the night tests, mostly about the unfairness to those who are woken up vs those who are sleeping

Head of the Ghent doping control lab Peter Van Eenoo proposes one possibility:
"You will be introducing or altering some genetic material somewhere. In the past, we really thought we had to change our DNA, but that doesn't have to be so drastic," explains Van Eenoo on De Avondetappe. ... "You could just as easily have a protein synthesized, which then leads to the production of EPO or growth hormones. My fear is that the same methodology, which worked fantastically during the corona pandemic, will be used as a new doping agent," said Van Eenoo. "We have three methods to detect doping, but we do not know if we are ready for this form of doping."
Then the question is at hand; does the expert suspect gene therapy is ready for use in professional cycling? "I wouldn’t dare say no to that answer," Van Eenoo reveals after a long silence. "That would be very naive. I suspect not, but I am not sure. I think it is very difficult for an individual to apply this, but I do think it is within the capabilities of certain countries."
 
It looks plausible. mRNA tech was first tested on men in 2013 (rabies vaccine), in 2020 we get the mass application for Covid and expanded research globally. A few years later many labs should have the tech to develop something custom. Maybe the 2023-2024 winter was the first trial period of a succesful campaign of gene doping in cycling.
 
I've been wondering for awhile now, if Alalphillipe at the end of his career chose not to go with the after covid craze of giving it , it all. and chose to end his career just staying normal. He still rides as fast as ever, it just looks slow. Maybe not.

What is the % wise in terms of average Peleton/top % of finishers pace increase on kind of "measurable" stages.

Would be an interesting study.

Especially if looked at historically too.

My guess is the spike would be at worst 2nd biggest ever after early 90s.

Yes... bikes are better. But vs bikes from late 2010s not that much better still. Especially up hill... and even on flat probably talking maybe 30-40 watts with aero gains. From what I understand the worst bikes in tour right now are similar aero wise to bikes ay end of last decade.

People cite tactics and Peleton going hard from start... but that has been the case for probably 20 years really.

Nutrition helps. That is for sure. But as seen even in say Ironman where nutrition matters even more there has not been the % jump in last 5 years has been in peleton.

I don't want to give an excuse because I believe that they are doped to the gills. That said, in my opinion, bike technology has made a huge difference. Experts often say nutrition is the biggest factor, but from my own experience, modern bikes have improved dramatically. I'm an overweight old guy, yet I can still ride surprisingly fast on today's high-end bikes. I'm not sure it's any one specific feature but everything as a whole.

siRNA/antisense RNA are something that's worth looking into, there's already some approved application of those (like inclisiran for familial hypercholesterolemia or patisiran for a specific form of amyloidosis) and you've got ongoing research like this as a proof of concept that they can be used as a blood boosting agent.

The effect are long lasting and the detection window is as of now quite short, for instance inclisiran is dosed once every six month but is undetectable after 48h at the recommended dose according to the PK studies.

There's been a huge amount of various aero tests recently and it's shown 30-40 watts is the aero difference between an 8 to 10 year old endurance bike with shallow wheels and high front end and a modern WT level aero bike.

It's important to remember that until today the fastest time up Alpe d'Huez after 2006 was Quintana at 39'22 in 2015. Evenepoel still did 37'55, putting him between 97 Ulrich and 2001 Armstrong. The sport desperately needs another Festina/Puerto

On a climb at 23km/h air resistance should be around 50-60W (check with the many available watt calculators), in no way a better bike can reduce the drag by 30-40W.

40W Is maybe the difference between a top notch aero bike and an unoptimized old frame, but at 45km/h, where the drag is above 300W.

Those 40W are a 10-15% improvement, so at 23km/h the saving could be 5-10W.

Back of the envelope calculation, but not far from the truth in my opinion

The example about track and field is great... and painful. Basically obvious there was doping, just hard to proof conclusively. Also point about people demanding more insight into the why of the Midnight tests. It's stupid as that would help the dopers.

Yep, there has been more than a certain reluctance to admit the seriousness of this testing event, or otherwise downplay it, except to moan about that it’s detrimental for cyclists to be woken at silly o’clock. From this article and others I have read, including interviews with quite a few seriously knowledgeable people, this is quite a big deal and indicative of intelligence that doping was going on. Whether this was widespread or within a single team we might never know because it is quite possible that they’ll want to protect their own information sources by doing tests beyond just the target suspects.

the problem is the majority of the public take their steer from the media on this, as they dont get the nuance, but the media dont want to kick the big ant hill anymore, their livelihoods rely even more on promoting the spectacle, I did see someone say David Walsh had a view on this, but Ive not seen anything published by him about it yet other than glowing tributes to the riders, which makes me think even he doesnt care that much anymore.

even if its pretty obvious to seasoned observers that this was a significant event, not a mere standard out of hours testing choice just to try something different, and that consequently theres probably a good deal to be concerned about in terms of the integrity of the sporting feats we are witness too in this race, and the media should be questioning these things more.

but I dont know how we break those walls down except tell people to question everything they see more.

Finally got around to reading it, and it seems to back up my suspicion that if anything happens it'll be ABP irregularities. To pinpoint a certain substance seems unlikely, but the testing is a lot better then back in Armstrong's days. Just think of all the tainted supplement stories.
As is mentioned in the article the ITA is trying to work in different ways to not only catch sports people but also the network of suppliers and medical practitioners.

The guys and gals at the Paris lab will be busy. Hope they remember to clean their machines, as they got suspended back in 2017 when a bodybuilder's sample was so full of steroids, ("200 times higher than generally found in positive cases") it messed up the testing machine and contaminated other samples.

Journalists too, have been burned by the flames of historical doping revelations, accused of being naive at best, deceptive enablers at worst. But on this occasion I'll stick my neck out and say that I believe we have plenty of cause to be optimistic about the cleanliness of the modern pro peloton.

Edit - add - I take it the article was written before Jérôme Chiotti's comments about UAE.
