Suggestions for 2011 Alp's Accom base

I am heading over to follow the 2011 Tour, and wanted to ask for suggestions for a good accommodation base close to/central the Alp stages. Had the stages been in the Northern Alp's I was thinking Annecy, however this may be too far north for a daily base. Grenoble looks a little industrial? Any suggestions of a town which would be good to base from would be appreciated. Plan is to ride some of the big 'name' alps (Madeleine, Galibier, Alpe d'Huez) the days before the tour reaches the final week, then watch the race before heading to Paris.

So probably set up a base for 6 days somewhere. Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

I would advise renting an apartment. There are plenty of options. I love the lake Annecy area. Beautiful and lots of good riding, especially on the eastern side.

Another option is to base yourself in the Alp d'Huez area. This place has good apartments and has great access to the mountain.http://www.chaletneigesoleil.com

There is a flat 3km road that leads from Villard Reculas right to the middle of the climb. It is the best access to the Alp d'Huez stage, all the team cars use it to avoid the chaos at the bottom.

You should also be able to drive over to the col d'izoard or Galibier for the stage on the 21st.

We stayed in Grenoble one year - Didn't enjoy that so much, a bit far from the action.

Next year we stayed at the top of Les Deux Alpe - it was the year of the AdH mountain TT with Jan and Lance. Staying at Les Deux was a great choice. Just far enough from the zoo around AdH, but we rode to town the day of the TT and also spent several days riding in the area. Easy access to various climbs. The only challenge was ending the day with a trip up Les Deux Alpe every time. It's not a particularly challenging climb, but it's a tough way to end a ride.

We got a two-bedroom lodge on L2A for six of us and it was quite reasonably priced. Plus, the views from up there are amazing.
