Well i have lived in Sydney my whole life and i can tell you it sprawls out a long long way. I know a number of good local bike shops but you really need to say in what area cause i could list a load that would all be useless to you as they may not be "local". Clarence Street Cyclery in the city is good, i have brought a number of things from there. Otherwise i know quite a number in the north of the city. Are you joining a local club in Sydney to?

Clarence St in the heart of the CBD can be expensive and carry miles and miles of Trek.

In the north, Turramurra cyclery, in the south Frasers at Taren Point. Todd at the latter is a nice guy and will talk bikes with you all day. Everyone there is really good. Very good with warranty issues there, too.

Would avoid most of the stores in the center but do think Clarence street is the lesser evil. the guys there are friendly and seem to know what they are talking about but is pretty expensive.

and the bike hub in dee why where i got my bike was rubbish. but had interest free credit.

would love to find a decent store somewhere more central

Most of the Bikes shops in the city centre are quite expensive and cater for the upmarket crowd. Clarence Street Cycles (Trek Australia), CBD on Kent, Velosphy at Moore Park and MC Cycles (Giant) on Clarence Street just to name a few.

Head out west slightly and you'll find Ashfield Cycles, Burwood Cycles and Stanmore Cycles.

At Parammatta there is Blackmans and the Bike Barn, both operated by experienced and knowledgable staff. Blackmans also has a store way out west at Penrith.

If you know what you need Cell Bikes on Parramatta Road, Camperdown are quite cheap, just not that helpful.

there's the thing - I'm not sure where we'll end up yet. Likely to be inner west, but who knows.
I don't mind riding or travelling to a store if it's good.

Considering a club as I'd like to get involved in the local scene both social and racing. Suggestions?

For touring and commuting bicycles, you can't go past Cheeky Transport in Newtown: http://www.cheekytransport.com.au/. They also have a very good team of mechanics for any type of bike and an in-house frame builder.

You should also check out http://www.sydneycyclist.com/

Very popular forum, got links to all the BUGs and racing clubs around the city and plenty of groups dedicated to specific interests and therefore people who will be able to give you good advice no matter what kind of cycling you are in to.

Well if you where to be in the inner west area i suppose that would be around the Parramatta area, i know they have a club but i have never raced/had contact with them.

I have however raced a few times with the Lidcome Auburn Cycling Club. They hold races just about weekly and seem like a very friendly bunch that would be more than welcoming to someone who has moved into the area.

Those may help, but there are numerous other clubs also if you do not end up in that area.

A lot of the St George locals recommend http://www.peterbundycycles.com.au/about/ I've used http://www.tbsm.com.au and have had some good wheels built there in the past. They used to be an off road specialist shop but with their move to larger premises, they how have a much wider range. Closer to the city, there is http://www.stevehoggbikefitting.com/ who is excellent (contributes bike fit articles to cyclingnews) but expensive. I would not go to either of the 2 big shops in the eastern suburbs - Europa Cycles in Kensington or Albion Cycles at Charing Cross.

Randwick Botany races every week at Heffron Park Maroubra. There is also St George Cycling Club who race weekly over winter at Oatley Park and have track events year round http://www.stgeorge.cycling.org.au/

When I last lived in Sydney (about 6 years ago) I used to go to Fulcher's Cyclery out at Chipping Norton. They were one of the better shops in the western suburbs at the time.

I also remember Bike Bug in the city being pretty good and Turramurra Cyclery being expensive but excellent. I have no idea if these shops are still any good though so don't shoot the messenger :D

I was there this time last year and used these guys

http://www.komcyclery.com.au/

Also, there are 2 rides at the weekend from the Kings Cross area (Darlington Street I think) - there were a few European pros out on the rides and abot 100 riders each day.

Pretty quick pace.

I got 20% off some Shimano cycling shoes at Clarence Street because I knew somebody who has spent a lot of money in the shop and he always promised me that I would get a discount there, and lo and behold I did.

That said, the staff seemed quite nice and friendly there.
