While it doesn't sound too bad, Phinney is starting to look like he might be one of those riders that has "stuff" happen all the time to derail his seasons.

So far this year he's got this concussion, and tendonitis that kept him out of BMC's training camp and Qatar. I believe in 2010 he had knee issues he rode through all season long and crashed hard on his knee when riding as a stagiere for RS to end much of his racing with them. In 2009 his season ended with a crash that fractured a vertebrae.

I seem to remember a few other less serious crashes last year as well, and breathing issues at some point apparently caused by enlarged tonsils (since fixed).

Seems like the kid's having a lot of issues for a rider so young. Hopefully he'll get past it quick.

I'm having serious concerns for his health as a road racer. Either last year or the year before, he had a crash that broke his helmet because it got between his head and the pavement. He posted the picture on twitter at the time.

Yes, not good to hear at all. Multiple concussions---not something that bodes well for a young person, or for that matter anyone.

Most intelligent athletes stop at 8 concussions, such as Steve Young.

Sorry to see Tyler go head first.

Yesterday:

All I remember was smacking my head pretty hard. I definitely have to thank the people at Bell because if hadn’t been wearing my helmet, I would have suffered a pretty bad injury.”

'Freak Accident'

Seriously, is Phinney the US response to Soler?

So phinney had a bit of a bump, rode home after the bump, and is fine.

Wow, was it a slow news day in the cycling world

My hope that TP performs this season is based entirely on a thread that is stickied on the top of this subforum.

So i hope his run of bad luck this season comes to a stop. Other than that the hype around him has switched me off slightly.

Compassion.. He had a minor bump, that was minor enough he rode home, he then chatted to a doctor on skype and was fine. Hes got a bit of a headache.

Thats the kind of accident that the average cyclist has. Its barely worth a press release, its certainly not worth an entire thread.

Whatever next. Phinney grazes his knee, Phinney sneezes, Phinney cuts finger opening tin of beans.

Its situations like this when every little thing about rider x is newsworthy is enough to put me off the kid.

I hate to say it because I've been excited about Phinney's talent for a while now, but the kid should have stopped racing about two concussions ago.

The more research that's being done every day now the clearer it is that multiple concussion victims are headed for very serious problems down the road. Phinney likely already has some pretty troubling brain scarring.

I hope he's alright and wish him the best.

in what way?? I've had a few concussions but it doesn't affect me at all. I know it can be later on but who then lives who then cares nothing to do about it now. so just enjoy your time. I read mick foleys book he had dozens of concussions and is now slowly seeing the effect of it. chris benoit is probably most well known for, but he had a fried brain or something from all the headtrauma. nothing like what phinney has had so far.

Yeah. Benoit is a extreme situation.

I mean, head problems can be expected if your doing this on a day to day basis.

There's been a lot of scientific research and discussion in the past few years about repeated minor head trauma, particularly in the U.S. where American football is a huge sport from the professional level all the way down to recreational youth leagues.

More and more the evidence is pointing to severely increased risks of alzheimers, depression, dementia and a whole host of other serious conditions due to brain trauma. One of the more surprising findings has been that major impacts are not needed to cause extensive brain scarring (for instance, unlike the obviously bone-jarring impacts at the NFL level, even young people who have never suffered a single major concussion-level impact may exhibit a lot of brain scarring from repetitive minor head collisions). The findings have not been encouraging for victims of multiple concussion events, either.

I agree with the point that what's done is done and one should try not to worry too much about the past. But, that has nothing to do with whether one should avoid future risks which might compound the effects of past traumas.

It was a huge shame to lose a talent like Saul Raisin, but his departure from the pro level of racing makes perfect sense. Phinney's case is much less clear cut, but I think he's reaching a point with all of his concussions so early in life that he should be asking himself hard questions about his future in the sport. He seems like a bright person from a nice family and someone who can live a great life outside of cycling whenever his cycling career is finished.

Again, I hope he's fine and I wish him all the best. If he continues racing--which I expect he will--then I wish him a great deal of success and look forward to America's first elite Roubaix victory.

Taylor Phinney is the new TommyD.
