...which was to be the prefecture of Vendee and to be called Napoleonville under the great Napoleon Bonaparte. "Napoleon" was removed from the city name during the Bourbon Restoration, only to be named Napoleon-Vendee under the second empire, before getting its current name. Though he has been dead for centuries, Napoleon has never been out of sight.
If we return to todays stage, the biggest drama of all happened in the last 10 kilometers, which was marred by crashes and mechanicals, some of them hurting top favorites' GC standing.
Froome assured interviewers after the stage, that " I'm not injured in any way. There's still a lot of road to cover before we get to Paris." . Some have likened Froome's double attempt to Alberto Contadors two unsuccesful attempts in 2011 and 2015 (both years 1st in Giro and 5th in Tour), and in 2011 Contador was involved in a crash in stage 1, losing 1'20'' to the GC favorites Cadel Evans, Andy and Fränk Schleck, who all ended on the podium in Paris as 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Is Chris Froome's crash and 51 seconds loss to GC favorites Bardet, Fuglsang, Landa et al. a sign of things to come? Of history repeating itself?
We probably won't find out tomorrow, with another flat stage and sprint finish to be expected, but there definitely is some food for thought for the next couple of days..
