The Caleb Ewan Thread

Last seen (according to PCS) at Super8 on the 21st September last year (a DNF).
So are we going to have a poll?
Off to Team Vino? Busted for something illegal? Too many barbies? Too many bottles of "Chateau Chunder"? Just fed up with getting beat even in 1.1 races?

There is nothing illegal or no team will be chasing him. Mu understanding is he either rides for a conto or he retires with the latter the most likely.

2025 is the year of stuffing the top 10 at races with as many guys as possible for UCI points. Ewan's habit of getting off his bike when he feels beat would not help him.

Multiple sources tell Velo the 30-year-old sprinter is caught in a pinch after a deal to leave Jayco-AlUla fell apart. Ewan sought an early exit from his contract to join the rebranded XDS Astana Team, a reliable source said.

That deal fell through, however, and efforts to remain with Jayco-AlUla have stalled, leaving Ewan in a precarious position, sources confirmed.

You have to think Ewan as a rider was always gonna have a shortlived stint as a top sprinter specifically because he's so short and reliant on being aero.

As far as sprinters go, he's funnily a a W/kg merchant but on a flat road that doesn't help that much, and you see that even though he is washed he still does better in these 1km uphill sprints.

So he can neither leave nor stay?

Yer, he's not been a happy bunny for a couple of years now so I'll wager it's time to hang up his cycling shoes.
Just an opinion but his unhappiness is his major problem, sure age, ability and physical things like injuries are major factors, but him constantly saying things he couldn't do for whatever reason is a major issue.
Within a team, top down when you have a rider who is constantly giving bad vibes there just is no room regardless of talent. He has a long laundry list of complaints and excuses, just never giving the feeling of an upward, onwards, positive trajectory.
Even now his status, unlike all other top riders is a mystery. No upbeat social media posts about positive things, look at my training, look at me not training, vacations, enjoying family, in the gym, out with friends, ect. Look at majority of cycling success stories currently much of it has an element of positive affirmation, reinforcing statements about self, team, training goals, future. Caleb is doing little to nothing to build strong team and mental support structure..He is only 30, and certainly amongst sprint specialists he can get over rollers as good as 75%..is he a climber? No
but he could be useful to a team or set realistic goals.

All very sad he is still young enough.

Being a professional cyclist is a tough gig. It requires huge commitment and drive and a need to deliver wins. As a sprinter the pressure is even more acute. You can't hide like many domestiques. If you can't get yourself in the right head space its a vicious cycle and career longevity is very short. This seems to be what happened to Caleb Ewan.

What led to him losing motivation in the first place (in 2020?), was it injury or illness? Covid related?

Word is he struggles being away from his wife and kids. Apparently he's a very hands on dad.

Yes, but don't forget that the team has no real experience with supporting a sprinter and that Ewan has a hard time managing sprints on his own.
Maybe Watson could be a potential lead-out rider. Or Ganna. He sprinted well in 2023.

Tarling, Turner and so on could help in bringing Ewan forward.

Interesting to see what support they can provide. Expectations low at the moment but you never know.
