We’re pleased to announce that the forum is now back on line.

As you may know, we had to unexpectedly close the forum. This was done as a precaution due to a potential vulnerability found in the software that the forum uses. We felt it was safest to keep the forum closed until we were satisfied that the vulnerability in the software was dealt with.

We are happy that the forum is safe to use.

Thanks for all your patience.

C'mon Daniel, don't talk down to us like we're idiots here.

Why were no updates given on the main page after the original post on day 1?

How can you possibly expect people, many of whom are as IT savvy as your own, to buy the line that it took 19 days to make sure the forum was "safe".

Can we please have some honest answers, instead of this pointless piece of blah?

That is an honest answer... It did take that long for the IT team within Future to make sure that the forums could go up and then to set them live again.

Also, an update was posted on day 1, like you said, but also a few days later another message was posted by Future explaining the situation as best we could.

Obviously, we wanted the forums to be back up as quickly as possible too.

Perhaps I was being a little unfair......does anyone know how many different forums Future runs, and if they all run on VBulletin? I presume that this must be Future's busiest/biggest forum by some distance, no? I'm just trying to imagine how much work might have been involved in checking everything for security issues.

Yes, they run mainly VBulletin, running various versions from 3.8 (such as here) to 5.0 on other forums (such as Tri-radar), but several such as Linux Format, Bikeradar use PHPBB. (some such as MacFormat use an external forum). The Majority are using 3.x.x VBulletin which is why they had to close so many forums when the attack was detected. Cycling news isn't "that" big a forum in the grand scheme of things, there are many forums out there with millions of posts and hundreds of thousands of members.

As far as Future goes, PcGamer has twice the traffic rank (Alexa) of CN, so its highly possible that their forum is more popular. CN would be one of Futures most visited, maybe the most visited.

Is there going to be an explenation as to why the forum was down for so long?or have i already missed it?Also how come knowone answered my email regaurding the situation?

Eeeh... Mr. Benson... can you promise us that if something like this ever happens again, and the problem has to be solved "now", instead of during the natural "slow time", then you'll make daily updates of progress?
Because what we just went through was a very refined form of toture!

I won't pretend to know what the problem was but a large number of forums were down and some are still not back up. I'm sure it had a large impact on website traffic and therefore advertising revenue across the whole Future Group, so I think they are probably getting them back online as soon as they can.

Indeed, love how people can presume the worst understanding the issues behind the downtime.

I hope future's prompt return to normalcy means they will expect the same time line of their forum members to their actions. :p
