We paid a lot more than that for police help at the road race that we staged last year.
By the way, police help is WELL WORTH IT!
Difference is that Cycling is part of French culture. It's not a niche sport as it is in the US. If you are in Paris for the final weekend you'll see the centre of Paris totally shut down. No cars from 7:00 all day, no-one even crosses the race circuit all day. The only people who I have heard complain are tourists, the locals understand.

your title
The French Gendarmes Work for a Lot Less than Our County Sherriff Deputies
is misleading. What organizers pay has no relation with salaries paid to police officers.

This is how it works for the NYC marathon. They pay abunch of money but get 3 times the number of officers for a discounted price. Local government also sees the tax base go way,way up the 2 weeks before and the 2 weeks after..I am sure that Melbourne sees better returns at hotels, bars, cafes and everything else during the TDU
