Makes some sense IMO because their other talent is still developing. If their plan is to dominate with a strong team like old Sky or JV then they need that core of riders to be well-oiled by the time the next big thing is ready to rock n roll. (Just think of how much better off Remco's GC challenges would have been if Pat had figured that out ahead of time.)

The announcement of the possible merger of Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step would create a monstrous team of fifty riders from which about twenty would have to leave. There is talk that Remco Evenepoel could follow or leave for INEOS Grenadiers and there is also talk of Movistar Team as a possible destination for Primoz Roglic.

A few days ago, Carlos de Andrés made it known on RTVE and yesterday Raúl Banqueri insisted on the interest of the Spanish squad that has only 7 riders announced for 2024 (although it probably has signed some more).

Thus, Eusebio Unzué's team could fish in troubled waters and go for possible riders who would be left out of a merger that, as of today, it seems that it will happen. Seeing the level of Enric Mas in the last big stage races in which he has participated, Primoz Roglic would arrive at Movistar Team as absolute leader of the project in the races in which he would like to participate.

(Roglic at Movistar means he could pick and choose the races he wants to do.)

Roglic leaving if a merger happens, I can understand. Remco leaving would be really, really strange. One would think keeping him in a (partly) Belgian team would be an important part of the objective with the merger. A merged squad should include Vingegaard, Remco, Van Aert, Van Wilder, Kuss, Benoot, Jorgenson, Koolj and at least two of Laporte, Van Baerle and Asgreen. Rest of the riders are of less importance.

Remco will surely try to win the tour in the future. Not possible with Vingegaard in his team imo, if he really wants to have a shot..

That wouldn't be strange at all. I really don't see Remco wanting to be on the same team as Vingegaard.

I still think it is really strange that a merged team with partly Belgian sponsors won't prioritze to keep the biggest Belgian talent in cycling in 50 years. Are really both teams that cash-strapped that this is the only option? Don't the emgergence of Remco give a significant boost in sponsor money giving them the chance to support Remco in a better way?

Soudal CEO was asked whether it was their ambition to go for the Tour podium with Evenepoel.

“No,” was their answer. "Suppose Remco was not there, then we would have done this too. It is nice that he is a Belgian, but if a Spaniard like Juan Ayuso came, that might be even better for Soudal. Our sponsorship is not related to a or other rider."

The thing is, right now he has a contract and he would have to stay without the merge. With the merge it will be his own decicion, if he stays or not. It doesn´t matter, if the team wants him to keep. He still can decide on his own, if he wants to stay..

I agree. I wouldn't say Ineos have particularly lost anything much, that list of riders are not in the Thomas, Roglic, Pogacar level regularly finishing on GT and Stage Race podiums the last 5 years. End of the day riders are continually arriving and leaving all teams when they're not right at the top of GC game continually. Thomas & Pinot would be an exception. I'm far more excited by all the continual young talent coming through really.

According to Thomas, Jumbo & Roglic hate Remco, so I think it will either be Roglic to Movistar or Remco to Ineos if Roglic stays anyway.

Sounds logical for Aussie Plapp but Ineos down to 14 guys for next year at the moment. Sir Jim must have something up his sleeve or the UCI will be wondering what the heck is going on.
I suppose if Jumbo get Soudal as sponsor and possibly some guys, then Remco goes to Ineos with some guys then everybody's happy and a WT license is up for grabs too.

If Ineos have not lost anything much, surely they would have no problem replacing that 'nothing much'?

In the space of a couple of years, they've become a team no-one wants to join, and everyone wants to leave. I'm not sensing a masterplan here.
