The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah 2014, 4-10 of August (2.1)

2014 Tour of Utah, from the 4th to 10th of August.

This year's Tour of Utah features another challenging parcours starting in Cedar City, in the southwest of the state, and finishing in Park City, east of South Lake. There are mountains in virtually all seven stages, and few can be considered to have suitable finale to the sprinters.

Startlist and Official Website

Stage 1, Cedar City - Cedar City: 183km

They should rename it to the "Senior Tour of Utah"

1.VOIGT Jens 42y+321d
2.HORNER Chris 42y+285d
3.RODRIGUEZ Fred 40y+335d
4.CANDELARIO Alex 39y+159d
5.EVANS Cadel 37y+171d
6.BASSo Ivan 36y
7.DANIELSON Tom 36y

Stages 3 and 5 will likely have sprint finishes.

Stage 3 is over Bald Mountain, which is high, but the climb is not very steep and it's far from the finish. The one factor that could affect things is the weather. Because of the mountains, that stretch has very unpredictable weather.

Stage 5 is pretty flat. The climb into Eureka is pretty gradual. The sprinters will survive this. The biggest factor there is the heat. That whole area is just straight up desert.

Stage 1 is a possibility for a sprint finish, unless we see people go nuts on that climb to Cedar Breaks. The climb from Parowan is gradual at first, but really kicks up toward the finish. The second kick is a bit tough too.

2 mountain finishes, not bad. I hope for a good showing from Garmin guys. Danielson, Acevedo and Morton were all great in August last year, but this year their form is uncertain. Garmin should bring someone for sprints here IMO. According to procyclingstats, they will have Von Hoff, but Von Hoff is also on Tour de Pologne list, so something is wrong there.

An epic two-man show, young vs. old. Kelderman and Horner to battle in the mountains like Andy and Alberto.

According to the Tour of Utah website Von Hoff is riding there.

According to the procyclingstats.com, Garmin's roster for Tour de Pologne is now confirmed and Von Hoff is included. It also includes Farrar, Kreder and Fernandez, so there goes my wish of having a sprinter for Utah.

Haas or Navardauskas would still be not without a chance for stage wins in this kind of race, though.

Yes, it should be live in Eurosport 2. The Tour Tracker will also be available. Coverage is provided by FOX Sports.

It's not on British Eurosport like it was last year.

I'm lucky that I'm a subscriber to Setanta Ireland who are showing it live everyday over here.

Premier Sports are showing it in the UK but delayed coverage the following day according to their TV guide.

Just took a look at Eurosport International's schedule and it seems we're not getting it broadcasted either. The rest of Europe will have to rely on the Tour Tracker here: http://tourtracker.tourofutah.com/

It starts tomorrow, it's time for a sticky, mods. This is one of a kind race.

Nobody gives a rat's about racing in the US, do they?

But that Tourtracker app beats broadcast coverage hands down. It is just brilliant. Pity about the races it covers, though.

If there's racing, we're interested around here for the most part. We've certainly followed races with worse parcours and worse fields than this. And yeah, the Tourtracker is brilliant.

At least the Tour of Utah tends to be the best of the US stage races. And it doesn't come with the same amount of self-important bluster that California or Colorado do, and is happy enough with its niche as a 2.1 race with a mixture of US domestic and US-interest pro teams. The others seem to be trying to ram down your throat that they're something they're not, and serve up often less interesting parcours than Utah too.

+1, I've always thought of Utah as different then the other two in some way. This is exactly that difference.

Anyways, glad to see Kelderman and Evans racing. Think Horner will probably take this if he has even a little bit of the form he showed last year. And he looked decent enough in the Tour.

He looked decent for about 5 minutes in the Tour. I think he'll use Utah just as training for the Vuelta.

No one cares about races in the UK, Australia and the Commonwealth, where ever that is. US races on the other hand are great.
