Sounds scary indeed. Most recent case I can remember is Tommy Giacomel at the Winter Olympics. For context, Giacomel DNF that day and never raced again later in the season.

Most of the times they blame those high heart rates to illness. In this case, if I were to bet my money, I would blame it on lack of competition, IMO.

I hope he does some medical exams before getting on the bike.
Fellow riders (and me) have have experienced elevated pulse with comparatively light effort. Mostly related to a sort of anaphylactic allergic response. Blood pressure drops and it's best to sit down about that time. My episodes were in areas where non-native flowers had been planted that bloomed early to promote pollination of fruit trees. Hybrid evergreen trees in large, commercial farms even more so when weather gets warm.
The PNW Springtime of Washington and Oregon can be torturous for many.

In this case Bernal would've passed out likely due to lowering of blood pressure (while doing intense effort).

I'd guess his body shut down that intensity....As Shadow noted dehydration can lead to the same effect. That's a more likely circumstance but Egan should know the drill in warm weather.

He seems to have learned how to manage the heat better during the third week. Earlier in the race, he was constantly pouring water over his head. He has a history of struggling in hot conditions, and when you combine that with the inconsistency caused by his numerous injuries over the years, you end up seeing the same recurring issues.

What surprises me is that INEOS does not appear to address these problems as proactively as some of the other top teams.

That said, it looks like France is going to experience a very hot July this year. Managing and adapting to the heat could become a decisive factor in the Tour.

Nice to see Bernal getting a good result and finishing strong.

Yeah, aside from that stage where he bonked for whatever reason, he rode a very nice Giro. Nice to see him back at a good level.

Also: his Colombian jersey deserves to get mentioned way more often. One of the best damn national jerseys I've seen in my 25 years of watching cycling.

Is this Giro better than last year's?
He finished strong, I'll give him that, but consistency still isn't there and he was never a top3 climber in the race even when he looked good. Given his ride in TotA I honestly expected a little more.
I guess it'd be tough for someone with his palmarès, but he’d have way more success as a stage hunter at this point in his career.
