I said it in the beginning of the year, during the Tirreno: Dennis decline isn't due to some transition to becoming a GC threat, it's the Merida bikes. They're godawful on itself, let alone when compared to the BMC wondermachine. So in that sense, I completely understand him. To make such a point of it, in the middle of a stage, after 7 months however is a bit strange.

So basically Nibali and Caruso would have crushed Roglic and Co. in the ITTs if only they had better bikes?

Obviously. Nibali would have taken atleast 5 mins on Roglic.

I don't know, it's impossible to tell a margin of difference with other bikes. Especially in a grand tour where recuperation and peaking plays a big role too. What is a fact however, is that almost every rider somehow sees a decline in TT results once they sign with Bahrain (or teams with other terrible materials). Dennis isn't the first and he certainly won't be the last. Merida, Cervelo (its old model at least) are junk when compared to BMC, Pinarello or the current Bianchi's for instance.

Uran is possibly the best example of materials matter. He went from great with Sky (Pinarello) and Quick-Step (Specialized) to godawful with EF (Cannondale). Cannondale has invested a lot of time and money in its newest TT bike (SuperSix EVO IIRC?) they've been using since this year. All of a sudden you see constant EF's up the rankings in time trials. Coincidence? I think not.

Basically, I got banned for saying someone should be held accountable for signing riders who, for whatever reason, don't perform up to the salary they're receiving, and just haven't returned since.

Then why, as a TT specialist, sign for a team with "MERIDA" right there in their name? Even if the Sheik himself personally drove a Ferrari full of cash up to his house, he still had to know what equipment he was getting himself into. He probably would've had to take a paycut, but if he'd signed for, say, DD for this year, he'd still be on a BMC bike, he'd be wearing Assos kit, and his sponsors would be in charge of the time keeping at all the major races.

No, you got banned for belittling Pete Kennaugh following his decision to take a break for mental health reasons.

Anyway interesting to see what happens with Rohan, don't see a future for him in this team after what happened today.

I don't know, that's why it's confusing to me. He knew this prior to signing with Bahrain. Every rider in the world knows this. Dumoulin seems to be unhappy with his newest Cervelo, Campenaerts put in so much effort with Ridley to get better bikes. These things matter to riders. That's why I don't know why this is suddenly such a big deal for Dennis. Maybe he has been working with Merida for new models? Maybe they agreed to upgrade their bikes when negotiating Dennis' contract and things haven't developed as good as Dennis had hoped? It's strange.

Oh, ok. Didn't know. You didn't strike me as a guy that would get a ban easily. Hope you're back (if only for the U23/junior info :D )

must be them moneys ;)
Also, that team is build on the disgusting background/foundations and shouldn't even be part of the civilized environment anyways...
EDIT: from reddit:
According to /sp/ Thor Hushovd said on TV that this might be about his team not allowing him to use the wheels of his choice in the ITT.
Allegedly he offered to pay for them out of his pocket and put the the stickers of the official sponsor on.

the merida bike and the bmc bike look pretty dang similar. Position doesn't look much different either.

I have a hard time believing it's all down to frame of the bike. I'm suspicious of the helmet, maybe the wheels, maybe the skinsuit (but Sportful is a good brand with connections to high tech Castelli to maybe not that last one).

According to Hushovd on Norwegian TV2 it's about the wheels. Hushovd talked to Rohan yesterday and Dennis had said he had a 40W disadvantage compared to better wheels...

So this was posted on another site earlier today, on his impending hour record attempt:
Dennis said he is still in the “planning stages” for a run at the hour title; he has yet to lock in the support of his team, Bahrain-Merida.

“At this stage it’s about planning what equipment I will be using,” Dennis said. “If I’ll have support from team equipment, or if I have to fund it a completely myself.”
Which is a completely unnecessary comment to make to the press. Clearly he was talking about specific non-sponsor kit he wanted to use, there's no way the team would not provide sponsored equipment for something like that. It was posted around the time he abandoned. Maybe team management wasn't happy about his protestations either.

Yeah, he's very clearly having issues with his equipment. But throwing your toys out of the pram is beyond juvenile at this point. He's 29. He's a professional bike racer. He's good enough that he might have gotten a result regardless. This is a bad look.
