While that may be true, you know as well as i do, that Vuelta stage wins do not compare to TDF stage wins. So, nice try there ;-)
I'm not saying Van Avermaet shouldn't have been more successful, but i think he also wore the yellow jersey a lot more than Porte, (the GC guy) did. And especially in 2016, your argument falls flat. While he may be an underachiever in some ways, he also races throughout the entire season and has given his team a lot of exposure (which is what the team needs).

And my point was that stage 5 of a TDF in 2016, while Porte has proven zero shits as a GC rider while Van Avermaet was in his best ever form, you don't have to make such a fuss about the team protecting their star rider (whether you like to hear it or not) who ended up winning the god damn stage. But as far as the team goas, i agree, it should have done better to prevent such time loss for their GC rider.

Since Trentin is the better finisher and 4 years younger, chances are it's Trentin. But what does that have to do with anything?

The relevance of me including Gilbert in the discussion is to show how difficult it is for top level classic riders to win GT stages, unless you are a top level sprinter, while in today's area of specialisation, fast sprinters play a limited role in the classics - So if you build a team around a Classics rider GT stages will be hard to find - Finally, Gilbert's 11 GT stage wins is not to be under-estimated.

Maybe not this year as Dennis probably shoots hard for the Olympics, but I'm kinda waiting something interesting to happen. Thinking like what Mick Rogers did his best (eldery) days at Giro Monte Zoncolan & TdF Bagneres-de-Luchon. RD with that just a bit lighter frame...The engine is there!

Well... it didn't take that long.

Just wondering if anybody has or knows how many race days the last few TDF or Giro ,Vuelta winners had before their victories..?
Dennis is a talent so I won't count anybody out for rider of the year for this year whatever it ends up looking like.
in most threads about riders and projections, you have seen the common phrase early season form..don't know if this year we would ever need to say that!!!
I am wondering who will be it..if only 1 big race takes place?

Unbelievably dumb. And what kind of point is he even trying to make when he says he's showing "the reality of how **** the situation is" and "not being one of [our] beloved drones who show their 'perfect world' as an elite athlete"? The reality of how dumb he is?

I guess he is simply frustrated at not being able to rode his bike on public roads? If this was his true motivation I don't blame him even if I would never have posted such a thing myself knowing the inevitable carry-on that would ensue. The reality is there is no evidence you can catch or spread the virus riding solo. The only reason this law has been implemented in those countries is the misguided belief that a cyclist might occupy a hospital bed which might otherwise be needed by COVID patient. Governments should still support and encourage healthy exercise. The health benefits of many outweigh the disadvantage of the few who might crash and possibly occupy a hospital bed.

Yeah, perhaps you are right, but the behavior is really strange and stupid. If he is frustrated at not being able to ride his bike outside he should just say that. Unfortunately he seems to have a problem with himself but he always seems to think that other things are the problem. Not the best way to sort things out.

There are people dying by the thousands, but he can't restrain himself to go out for a drive, and then *** about the reality of the situation. This guy is completely out of it. I 'm going out on a limb and say that he likely doesn't live in the tiniest of houses. There are families with 3, 4, 5 kids who can't go outside and live in small houses, without a garden.

This is not just stupid, this is sign of severe mental issues. Completely distorted worldview, with him at the center of all things. The fact that he feels the need to publicly "boast" about his behavior is another sign. As if he expects everybody to applaud him and agree or condone his actions. Of maybe the opposite so that he can have a fall out.

It's difficult to know how much pressure any of us can handle. RD clearly can't just take a discreet wander by himself to alleviate his cabin fever. The declarations afterward sound more like a serious cry for help.

This isn't just mental issues.

It's mental issues in combination with being a massive butthole

Yeah… that was a bit stupid. Also… couldn't he have just... gone back to Australia? Or are they under total lockdown as well?
Australia isn't under total lock down (more partial) but flights are few and far between. Also, on arrival you have to complete 2 weeks of total self isolation, which probably wouldn't be easy with a 2 year old.

For all we know he cracked, went to get groceries or similar and pulled over for a few minutes to clear the head. Sure, Dennis can be a jerk, but he's also openly admitted to having some mental health issues as well. Not the best way to sort it, but humans make mistakes.
