Horner's Vuelta win. He didn't exactly come out of obscurity, but that performance still sits far above anything else he did before or since.
Horner had a top 10 in TdF and numerous top 15s in GTs, he also had many great results in prestigious 1 week stage races and also many top 10s in classics many years before his Vuelta win.
I think his win was as legit as you can get, his breakdown of the Angliru stage is a great watch and a huge part of that win was him riding smarter than Nibali. If you watch that stage Nibali (a rider about 8kg heavier than Horner at that Vuelta) puts in attack after attack on one of the steepest climbs in Europe on Horner (who was around 61kg then) who just keeps a steady tempo, then gets caught behind a moto. Nibali burned himself out and then didn't have the gas to get back on after the moto.

I think Sonny Cobrelli was a guy that had basically one season of being hot *** then fell off (in his 30s too).
I don't think Froomes performances were super sus either. He was hired to be a wind shield because he was large and made great power, then dropped about 15kg, and it is quite apparent he wasn't just heavier, but actually sort of fat.

We are 6 pages on this thread and no mention of one of the biggest smash and grab of the last 5 years...

A guy with no results, no form and no contract winning a grand tour with one of the greatest displays of week 3 strength we had seen at the time.

A 3 years contract given to him and his only notable results come when he's out of contract at the end of that period
