Can someone explain to me how la Vuelta is a top 3 most prestigious race when the amount of riders that peak for it yearly is, idk, like 2? Not even the Spaniards themselves can be bothered.

True but only because it is right after the TdF. It is still a GT, very hard stages, very competitive.

I wouldnt necessarily say it is the 3rd most prestigious but definitely top 5

  1. Tour
  2. Giro
  3. Paris Roubaix
  4. L-B-L
  5. Flanders
  6. Vuelta
  7. Lombardia
  8. MSR
  9. Dauphine
  10. Paris Nice
  11. WC - it depends on the course really -
Olympic RR gold is only of interest if your fellow countryman wins it.

This is great thread topic, but unfortunately I do suspect a bot as the OP. If only because it is a first post.
Can bots give you a like? ;)

This is a very subjective topic. Olympics RR gold is based upon how important the Olympics are viewed in your country, not if your fellow countryman wins it. I think it gained importance when they started inviting professionals.

I don't look at races from a pure cycling perspective but on how they are viewed by all people. Outside of cycling I think PR is the only monument well known by non cycling fans outside of western Europe. TdF is of course #1.

For the people like my parents that love a bit of cycling but don't follow all year round:
TdF

[biiiiiig gap]

Vuelta
Olympics
Tour of Britain
Roubaix
Giro

For me:
RvV
TdF
Giro
Roubaix
Worlds
MSR
Strade Bianchi
Liege
Olympics
Lombardia

Olympics is on the way up in prestige; it's hard to be a properly big race with such a short history in terms of the best guys, if it keeps being won by people like Remco then it gets more important. And sorry, but the Vuelta is bobbins; consolation prize if the Tour didn't work out, or free hit if you've had a good Tour, probably higher as part of a Giro-Vuelta double.

I think the only real debate on the list I am interested in is between Flanders and Paris-Roubaix for best one day race. For me cycling is a sport that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and extreme sport. When I was younger I enjoyed the extreme aspect of it. Now? I just want to see a fun, engaging race on which the riders come back safely. Which is to say, I get the appeal of Roubaix but I prefer Flanders. Plus, the fans and crowds on Flanders? Can’t beat it. Throw on some epic cobbled climbs. For me it’s the best one day race in the sport and it’s not even that close.

I don’t know if it’s in the top 10 but I think that Montreal race is the most underrated. That circuit has hosted everything and it makes for perfect racing, especially given our current group of racers. So many ways to win it. Beautiful city.

How would you rank it against E3, San Sebastian, Omloop, ECRR and Giro dell'Emilia? It sounds to me like you might think it should be above them all?

Tough question. I’d say it’s the most prestigious circuit outside of Europe. I do love those Belgian cobbled races. Honestly, maybe it’s spot in the calendar but San Sebastián doesn’t excite me but I recognize it’s a great route in a gorgeous area. Yeah, ok, I’ll rate Montreal above those with Omloop being just behind it. Judging by the way you asked the question I take it you don’t agree!

That's unclear to me. Of Montréal and the 5 races I mentioned, does that mean that you rank Omloop as the second highest (with Montréal above all 5)?

In my attempt of a list, I have it second lowest of the races in question (above Emilia). Omloop and ECRR are both negotiable.

Probably but it’s apples and oranges for me comparing a hilly classic in Canada to European cobbled races. Montreal has a sweet spot on the calendar as well.

Yeah the top 10 isn’t that debatable though like I said we could debate the best monument. It’s really 11-20 that’s highly debatable.
