Top 10 Reasons for Rooting for Cuddles

10) He’s facing his last, best chance to win the TDF. Andy is young, and will have many more chances In fact,

9) Andy will win the 2010 TDF in a few weeks, when the CAS decision is handed down. Not only that, but

8) Andy will be the favorite in 2012, for the same reason. Does anyone really want the 2013 season to begin with Andy owning more TDF titles than Bert?

7) While both riders have finished second twice, both of Cadel’s wins were heart-breakingly close, coming down to final ITTs when he couldn’t get the time he was thought to be able to get. Evans also lost a Vuelta because of a flat tire.

6) Evans has scratched and clawed his way to this point. He picked up 3” on stage 1, 8” on stage 4, and more than a minute on stage 16, including 3 extra seconds beyond his breakaway companions. The last time a GT contender tried to pick up a few seconds on opening non-mountain stages was maybe Cunego in the Giro in 2005. We all know how that turned out. An Evans victory would signal that it doesn’t have to be all about sitting in the peloton and waiting for MTFs. Even more than that, it would be a victory for a guy who uses the strengths that he has, and doesn't worry about all the complaints that he doesn't ride the way a GT winner is supposed to ride.

5) Andy sprinted at the end of the Beille stage to take two seconds off of Cadel. How would you feel if those two seconds were the margin of victory?

4) Andy has had every possible advantage in this Tour. Only 1 ITT, a TTT that favored his team, Contador weakened by the Giro and crashes. If he were a deserving winner, he should have blown open the race by now.

3) Evans has suffered from poor team support his entire career. This TDF is no exception. While Andy has teammates galore working for him, including his own brother Frank, who can be used to start attacks, Evans has often been alone. Though everyone recognizes he is a better TTer than Andy, the TTT was a wash between their teams.

2) Anyone with a cleft chin and a nickname like Cuddles needs every break in life he can get.

And the no. 1 reason for wanting Cadel Evans to win is:

Australia has never produced a TDF winner. Evans would be the first. Not only that, but both his first and last names are of Welsh origin. How many TDF winners do you suppose Wales has produced? How many TDF riders do you think Wales has produced? Yep, you’re probably right.

11. If Evans loses then the aussies will be intolerable. We have already seen them turn on Voeckler for not blowing himself up chasing Andy.

One. Nicole Cooke won La Grande Boucle Feminine (twice), sometimes referred to as the women's Tour de France.

There have been three Welsh Tour de France riders. Colin Lewis in the 60s, Geraint Thomas and Magnus Backstedt.

Wait, what? I'm worried that I'm missing out on a great joke here.

As luckyboy points out, he lives in Wales (about ten miles from me) and his wife is Welsh. If he has kids then they will be Welsh. So that makes him Welsh (certainly more Welsh than a variety of New Zealanders who have represented Wales at sport, including a friend of mine).

what and you think if Cadel loses, his haters will be the height of sportsmanship...I think not...we are just as bad as each other :p

weve had to put with them for years - its time hopefully for payback!

.

Contador got 8 seconds on his rivals in a pan flat stage in the Giro first week when he attacked on a little bump.

Nibali got over half his time on Mosquera on stages 3 and 4 of the Vuelta when he came 4rd to Gilbert Purito and Anton one day, then 2nd to Anton the next on small finishes, while Mosqura struggled in the pack. It was some awesome **** far better than what Cadel did with his 8 secs. I have no idea where you got that "first time in a gt since 2005" crap. I looked at the last 2 gts and there are better examples already.

Also while i agree with some of your points, a lot of it is a real stretch. You make Cuddles out to be on this weak team even though they beat Leopard in the ttt, and Schlecks have hardly had such a strong team.

But the piece de resistance was when someone said that Evans should win because Australians on the forum would become unbearable if he loses.

Fear of the Cadel fans on this board is the one thing thats keeping me from hanging a Cadel flag on my house tomorw.

THey will be unbearable if he wins, especially if you know who continues with this bizzare "You all hate Cuddels" act and starts taunting the forum. And some of the Cadel fans on the forum hate half the riders in the peloton because they percieve them to have screwed Cuddles in one way or another, or often simply because they're south european.

IF Cadel wins, forget July, this place might be pretty disturbing for some time. If it werent for that i would be saying a little prayer for Cadel right now because like you said, its his last chance at the dance.

More reasons:

When he was 8, he got kicked in the head by a horse

He is a passionate Tintin fan

One for the mountain bikers. Have you seen how they have five steps on the podium in MTB races. Well that's because of him. Sometime in the 90s when he was an unknown teenager, he rode in a MTB World Cup race in Oz. He came fifth and the UCI bloke in charge demanded that the podium be extended to five so he could be celebrated. They have used five places ever since.

These are all genuine facts.

Now, for an opinion.
He lost the 2007 Tour de France due to Contador riding with Rasmussen on Plateau de Beille. He lost 1'52. Without Rasmussen, he probably would have won.

Do you want to disappoint this little boy?

Actually someone else said that not the OP. Maybe you should go back and read it again ;)

Who exactly are the "haters"?

Are any of them real?

Ah apologies, will change it.

There are plenty of haters of Evans on this forum. You don't have to live the guy but a poster like Timmy loves Rabo can still appreciate Evans and his performances. Others who dislike him just simply continue to hate which has clouded their rational judgement and thinking.

While this is true, I do not think cycling itself can survive the wave of smug that will emanate from the Schlecks. It is already bad enough and they have barely won anything. Evans is our last, best hope to stave off the Schleckpocalypse.
